Written in the 1800s, one must make allowances for the lengthy sentence structures but the message is without flaw.
Easy reading, informative, and it covers MUCH that one would never guess in such a book.
Bishop Robert Vasa has an ABSOLUTELY fantastic companion audio series to help one understand much more fully the glorious message this book brings to the reader. (Cheap! - search Itunes: about $10 for 16hrs of audio- Goldhead Group) His presentation style is so easy to listen to and understand. HE has an inner life which is why I purchased this book, as I'm seeking my own inner-life, and this is the best means to do so. Love his style!
Keep the book handy while listening to his chats. Each chat is about an hour or so. I've read the book and shall keep it always. It's not a book to read and give away. One must read it again and again to grow an inner-life that will benefit everyone around you.
One Pope in history said this book is his favorite night-time reading material.
Now, it's mine too.

One helpful aspect of this book is the motivation that it provides. It is so strong and forthright about stressing that one must spend time in prayer everyday, that it should be your first priority, and that you must continue to grow in your prayer life, ultimately striving to be in a constant state of prayer. Yet Fr. Chautard pulls no punches and stresses how difficult a life a prayer is. This is not something that can be done with your mind shut off or matter of factly. It requires serious meditation, examination of conscious, and planning your day so that prayer doesn't become an after thought 5 minutes before going to bed. Fr. Chautard gives plenty of advice to accomplish this. Frequent communion, frequent reading of scripture, constant ejaculations, nightly examination of conscious, etc.
This is such a beautiful book, one that will keep you devoted to a life of union with God. I will read it several more times in my life.
