Jack formerly had a run-in with a sassy FBI agent, that Jack promptly threw off his land. A year later, that agent, Janet Killeen, is broken in body and soul, having taken a bullet protecting her charge, an I-Team reporter. She has been physically damaged by the bullet and emotionally devastated by the side effects. When she is stranded on the road past Cimarron, Jack finds her and rescues her. Wary, she is still a little standoffish until she begins to see the real Jack - charming, helpful, willing to go out of his way to make her comfortable. Hmmmm-there's a sexual attraction, too. Who'd have thought? Certainly not Jack, who was happily married until the day his wife died and never thought he'd find a woman so attractive again. His age is a factor - in his mind, not in Janet's. There's also a good but obvious subplot about someone harming one of Jack's prize horses. Nate and Megan make an appearance, too on the way to another HEA. Good one.
This book is about older love, sex and relationship. I would have like if Jake where a like younger like 55. But the book still works so I guess what I think doesn't matter it was a great read.
Janet Killeen is a severely wounded, recovering FBI agent heading to some down time at a Colorado resort called Scarlet Springs. She knew bad weather was closing in, but didn't count on it coming so quickly. Now she has run off the road, no cell service and her car has been buried by snow plows. Janet attempted climbing an embankment to at least get up to the road. With her damaged leg, it's impossible.
Jack West was heading to bring hay to his cattle in the storm, and noticed a car in a ditch. Passing it he notices back lights coming on and realized there was someone in the car. He climbs down and is shocked to see the young FBI agent he threw off his land some time ago. Janet is equally shocked at the sight of Jack West. He helps her to his truck and drives her back to his home.
I missed having a new Pamela Clare novel to read. With her focusing on getting better last year, writing new stories, obviously had to and should, take a back seat. Now that's she's better though, she's back and still awesome, as if there was any doubt.
This novella is around a hundred and sixty pages and each and every page is engaging and I didn't want to stop reading. Not going to lie, I was completely tempted to call into work and say I was bedridden for the day, leaving out that it would be to finish a book. Better sense prevailed though and I went to work.
This is the story of Janet, the FBI agent from Striking Distance, and Jack West, Nate West's father. Janet has recovered, for the most part, from her injuries. There will always be problems with her leg and a few other things but she's walking, which, according to her doctors, was a near impossible dream. With a new job starting soon, still in the FBI but no longer in the field, she decides to take a week vacation to recharge and relax before her new position starts. However a snow storm comes sweeping across areas of Colorado and she crashes off the road into a fence. The fence belongs to Jack's farm, he finds her car with Janet inside and takes her back to the ranch. From there the sweet and sexy romance starts.
I loved that this wasn't a romance with twenty and thirty year olds. Don't get me wrong, I love reading those because those fall in my age range, but I feel like a lot of the time in romance novels there are very few romances with heroes and heroines that are both over 35. Certainly not 45 and 63. It was a nice change and I loved both of these characters so much and I wanted to read about them finding love again and being happy.
Of course there is a bit of a mystery with some suspense and of course Clare does it wonderfully. It was very satisfying.
Loved this novella and I cannot wait to add it to my physical book collection. Pamela Clare is back and I can hardly wait for the next I-Team novel Seduction Game.

Jack and Janet met during the book Striking Distance and they didn't get off to the best of starts-ended up Jack throwing her off his land, well a whole lot has changed in a year. Jack saves Janet after she gets run off the road, a whole lot happens in the course of the following week. It was great reading a romance were the main characters were older than 30!
And we have a new I-Team book to look forward to later this year.
