good, but doesn't hold a candle to Stories of the Spririt, Stories of the Heart

this compilation apparently replaced Stories of the Spirit, Stories of the Heart: Parables of the Spiritual Path from Around the World, which is now out of print. while i can recommend them both, i strongly urge those interested in the the book being reviewed to find a used copy of the other. i remember looking for a copy as a gift for someone, and mistaking Soul Food for it. i couldn't find some of my favorite stories, which clued me in to the difference, and overall was struck by more glossiness in Soul Food: Stories ... at the cost of depth. it's worth seeking out used copies of the other. (i recommend that at some risk of depleting the supply - i continue to give away copies as gifts, over the years, and hope they don't run out!)

regardless, i appreciate the good and constructive work of the authors of both books (jack kornfield the link between the two) - the best kind of work.

Nothing helps me understand something about the experience of being a human so much as a story.
Here is a wonderful book chock-full of classic stories that illustrate the many dimensions that surround our age-old quest for deeper meaning, humility, kindness, compassion, generosity, and love.
The chapter introductions are beautifully written and poignantly written - very moving and often complete within themselves.

I've given many of these as gifts to friends who are looking for something beyond the normal waking experience.

Soul Food...LITERALLY!

I'm always seeking inspiration from unconventional sources. Although a book is certainly not unconventional, the stories provided here are! When there are tough decisions to be made and life altering experiences that shake you to your core, this book offers some stability and comfort to help you understand that nothing [no thing] is by coincidence or accident. It takes a deeply rooted look at the triumph of the human spirit and everything it takes to evolve and grow as a human who is being. I really like that the stories vary in length. So if I'm in the mood for a quick pick-me-up, or relaxing with a glass of wine, there's a story that's sure to speak to your soul.

This book contains many wonderful teaching stories. It is weakened by including many stories by Forrest Carter. He wrote Little Tree, published it as fact, but was later reclassified as fiction. Check out author's story on Wikipedia.

It's better than not having something available, but I liked Stories of the Spirit Stories of the Heart so much better. I wish it were not out of print. I have given at least 20 as gifts. Last Christmas I had to give Soul Food because I couldn't get "Stories".
