As I started reading this debut novel I was in awe of her writing style. It's easy and poetic. The characters are quite 'real' and it gives the story something extra.
I did have some difficulties with the extensive descriptions of conversations, music, what people were wearing and stuff.
And I was utterly at a loss why a date with some douchebag was included. It did not add to the story in my opinion. Not everything had to be told or discussed extensively so I do think some parts could have been edited, conversations could have been shorter for example. It made the story lag a little in the beginning. I was thinking 3 stars, still loving the writing.
However, as soon as the relationship between Sonnie and Hunter was developing, the story perked up and I absolutely loved the poetic texts, the honesty between the couple and such. The author's love for poetry and music is shining through.
The last part of the story totally surprised me. I was really disappointed in Sonnie even when I could understand her reasoning. The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but leaves a door open to the next book (I think about another couple?) and I can't wait!
In the end I decided on 4.5 - 5 stars as I really enjoyed the book once I was past the first part.
I didn’t love Sonnet in the beginning, she seemed flighty and unwise, oblivious to what was going on around her and consumed with Champagne problems (like ohmagad everybody loves me!). She purposely set out to mess with men’s emotions: making them “love” her just in time for her to lose interest in them. Is it any wonder it bit her in the butt?
But the emotional blackmail that happened in this book was upsetting and what Sonnet put Hunter through was what really broke the camel’s back. It really made me dislike her, and pretty much hate Vaughn, even though she was clearly unhappy as well. Nearly to the point that I wasn’t convinced she deserved an HEA much less the love of not one but TWO dear men.
I gave this 3 stars because of the poetry and the writing but this book is otherwise so against my personal preferences in a romance that I can’t really provide a higher rating. I dislike other woman/ other man issues and there was obviously a big one here.
Besides that though, the way that the OM was handled was just fully unpleasant. When Conner laid into Sonnet and/or Vaughn I could have cheered! Unfortunately Conner’s insight didn’t really redeem what Sonnet put Hunter through and he took her back basically no questions no reprisals.
Sooooo yeah, this was a miss for me. But if these wouldn’t be deal breakers for you, please enjoy and ignore my rant!
This is Sonnet (OMG... I just loved that name) or as her friends call her Sunny's story and Bree Lauren took us on an incredible journey with her. Sunny was so full of life and energy, it was fun reading about her.
The sext poems were so unique and a marvelous addition to the story. There were so many amazing lyrics and poems throughout the novel and I loved them all.
The audible version of this novel was narrated by Leslie Gray Robbins and she did an amazing job of bringing Sonny to life. You were able to feel Sonny's energy while listening to the story.
For a debut novel this book was phenomenal. It was engrossing and will have you hooked until the end. I would highly recommend it to all lovers of contemporary romance.
Really digs into emotions of friendships as well as falling into love for the first time. It was relatable, and the main character, Sonny was SO cute and quirky - But super honest in such a likable way - I could totes hang with this girl if she was real.
I loved The chemistry between Sonny & Hunter - even though I secretly wanted Sonny to end up with Vaughn, I'm excited to see how his story progresses in possible future books. I give this a strong 4 stars, only because I like drama, and feel this could've had maybe a little more drama too it. But all-in-all I loved it!
