"5.0 out of 5 starsYou gotta read this series!
ByDragonflyon February 8, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition
Noooooo! Where's the next book I have to have! So much is going on and to be left hanging.... OMG, I couldn't put it down once I started because everything was just moving so fast.
I loved the small comic moments like how Cayden hated having a personal guard and how hard they had to work to keep up with him because he practically ran everywhere.
Mordecai still hasn't changed much! Old friends are reappearing and new friends....
You have to read this series! You WON'T be disappointed!
I'm freely giving my review for an ARC of this book, but I bought it, too! I have to have the third book yesterday!"
"5.0 out of 5 starsUnlikely Allies & Unknow Foes

"In this story, we have all 4 of the original "godling" siblings, back in "play."
Artio, a lover of the sky and celestial wonders, has been brought back from the heavens. The twins: Avery/Alfreda, the mother of the lands, and Cayden/Caerwyn, the fortress - reincarnated in human form. And lastly, Helga, who displayed an affinity for the dead.
Each is on his or her own journey that will end with all four face to face again, after years of separation and deceit.
This is the second book in a saga that sweeps across the kingdom of Cathair and the Primordial Lands of the Spirit and the Flesh clans. We join both Avery & Cayden as they struggle to remember what has happened before and fight against those who wish to control them and keep them from the duties they have over the souls and lands.
I truly felt as though I was swept up along the journey with Avery & Cayden to save the lands from the darkness and evil that Helga had planned. Clashing with enemies both new and old. Finding allies in unlikely places. Fighting against a magic so dark with the outcome uncertain and shrouded in dense fog. All players moving to the end point, will all be lost or renewed?
I'm on the edge of my seat poised to get my hands on the next chapter in this story!"

Because this is dark fantasy, other things came to mind. I recalled the movie Legend with Tom Cruise back in the day that similarly popped with such vivid characters and action scenes and powerful imagination. And because writers have dominant senses through which they come at the world, much like regular people do, I appreciated the fact that Faw took the time and exercised the discipline to use all five senses, sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound in her storytelling; it helped to make her lavish settings more visceral.
Soul Sanctuary is the first book that I have read by Susan Faw and while it is part of the Spirit Shield series I was able to follow along with most of what was going on very well. I really enjoyed how well the story line itself flowed taking you from one scene to the next and then stepping over to another character so well without there being a major hiccup. Instead it made you want to read more so that you could learn of what was happening to the character that you just left behind to check on the other. I enjoyed how they encounter the situations that not only test them but some even hold the keys to reminding them fully of what they once were before they were returned to another life. Helga is definitely the character to dislike and despise the most because she sows so many seeds of discord but she is the thread tying it all together.
This book will definitely leave you with questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book when it comes out. I just wish that Cayden wasn’t so dismissive at times just because he has never heard of something because as you’ll see it quickly becomes his downfall and a snare to him being of any assistance to his sister Avery who desperately needs his help.
Of course I will be going back and reading the first book in this series to fully understand all of the dynamics surrounding the various characters and how they all came to be so. But there are so many characters and they all play an important role in the events unfolding in this story. They each play their part and they do so well. There are some surprise elements for sure and I really enjoyed that.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and cannot wait to read the next book in this series and as stated before I will be going back and reading the first book in this series for sure. This is an engaging fantasy novel with good characters, beautiful descriptions that draws you in as two siblings strive to try and save the world that they love while one sibling seeks revenge and the other seeks to destroy and control all.
There plenty of times where I felt the flow of the writing and fell into the story but there were many moments where the flow stopped. The problem was mostly from the writing style, it would switch from showing us what's happening to telling us what's happening and those moments really impacted my desire to continue reading. It has all the potential in the world but feels like it was written and edited in a very short time
Despite the problems I couldn't bring myself to stop reading and after spending a few days reflecting on the overall story I believe I'll continue to the next in the series, with hope that I end up loving it or at least find out what happens.
The bad: This book is pretty slow to start out. It takes about 5 chapters before your into the story and able to really enjoy it. The writing is a bit over the top descriptive in places as well.
The Epilogue: If you read the first book or are a fan of epic fantasy with the heroine taking the lead without the need of a man/romance then you will enjoy this book. Just be aware you have to stick with it for the first 5 chapter.
This is an amazing trilogy and the middle book has none of the slowness (which was all due to world and character building as I suspected) of the first one so those who decided to DNF this series should have given it chance.
