Soul Scent continues the adventures (and mis-adventures) of Fia, Zackie, Cam and Lucas. Three are human and one appears canine, but is really a Psychopomp-helping spirits caught in this world to enter the next.
Reading Soul Search and Soul Scent has converted me to a paranormal fan even though my usual read is historical fiction. Both books are filled with historical events and characters which blend smoothly with the protagonists’ current lives and experiences.
Crime scenes and romance, canine quirkiness and human frailties, lost souls and bereft humans, mysteries from the past and the present, more than enough to keep you reading much later than you meant to.
I’m lucky enough to be a member of Reyna’s real-life Search and Rescue team, and to know the real Zackie (whom I suspect may actually BE a Psychopomp). For readers unfamiliar with what happens on a search and rescue mission, or more sadly, a search and recovery mission, Reyna’s expertise and attention to detail will expose you to the realities of being a first responder.
Fia and Zackie’s continued saga rescuing both bodies and souls is engrossing and addicting with some tantalizing teasers to keep you wondering what lies ahead, in this world and the next!
For more than a thriller about what causes those things that bang in the night, SOUL SCENT is actually about the things that bring pain in life, how that pain lingers in death, and the terrible consequence that follow for both the living and the dead. The reader feels their pain and hopes for resolution.
SOUL SCENT is the sequel to SOUL SEARCH which introduced Zia, a woman learning to understand the power and meaning of her ability to see the dead, Cam an English seer, and Zackie, a psychpomp in the form of Plott hound who leads the dead into the afterlife.
The story will please readers who want to track the fates of the several spirits who haunt the book: Maggie Pierceson, a suicide; an ancient Lenape Indian warrior; the three lost children; Hannah, the former wife of Lucas Tremaine, a TV ghost-hunter show producer who has taken a liking to Zia; and the lost old man who died alone.
But the story will also please readers who hope to see the live heroes of the book face and try to overcome the frailties of their own lives.
Zia in particular comes to understand that she must step from the fringe of her life where she had retreated to become more forgiving of herself and her fellow humans because after the ghosts are gone what’s left is a group of live humans who must trust one another.
The story is strongly written with several scenes of human-spirit (and spirit-spirit) encounters that are both frightening and revealing. Favis keeps the large roster of spirits in check, and presents the complicated tale in a plain and easily-understood manner, leading the reader in and out of the trouble she has created.
A worthy read.
