The Grammys sparked the idea with the release of "Grammy Nominees 1995" (really music from 1994): the compilation disc to accompany a music award show. Over the past decade the Grammys have created a lock on the concept with annual discs to accompany the awards, including multiple ones in some years (2001 had "Mainsteam", "R&B/Rap" and "Latin"); the Latin Grammys also recieve the same treatment. But with the exception of the Grammys, few other awards have really attempted to create albums as well. The Source Awards made a few (1999-2001), but stopped; and the BET Awards made one in 2004. "Soul Train Music Awards 2002" was the Soul Train's one-and-only attempt, and overall it is decent disc. Unlike the Grammys, and like The Source and BET, it offers a scattered summation of nominees; versus covering a few selective awards. As with the TV show itself, it covers a wide variety of urban music including traditional R&B, contemporary R&B, hip-hop and even some gospel. That is the discs greatest asset and fault; it offers a great snapshot of multiple genres, yet it doesn't totally gel in the end. It's a can be a tad too much to go from The Isley Brothers to Jagged Edge to Fabolous in that order. Granted, the Grammys have as much variety, but the discs flow better due to covering specific awards; which have similar sounds in each award. That aside, it can not be ignored that there is an enormous anount of talent here:
(1) Alicia Keys "Fallin'" (Remix feat. Busta Ryhmes) A-. Alicia has the uncanny ability to take worn out material and give a fresh new sound. "Fallin'" is a perfect example; her piano skills match with her heartfelt lyrics to create a deeply effective song. Busta is good with his (for a change) relaxed raps, but they seem to take away some of the depth.
