Editorial Reviews

Gatefold, 2LP, 180g Colored Vinyl. Includes CD version of the album.

A Pale Horse Named Death is Sal Abruscato's band, so it's his musical fingerprint, and the band's sound and style is as distinct as his DNA.

While it is true that Abruscato co-founded Brooklyn's black-humored doom legends Type O and that he manned the kit for LoA during their watershed albums River Runs Red, Ugly and more, A Pale Horse Named Death is his brain trust.

He sings and writes the songs, and stepped out from behind the drumset to play guitar. His main partner in the band is Matt Brown, a fellow Brooklynite, who is also a seasoned studio vet -- a producer and engineer who has toured with luminaries like Lou Reed, Jane's Addiction and more.

In the live realm, the lineup includes Type O drummer Johnny Kelly and guitarist Eddie Heedles.

On the surface, A Pale Horse Named Death are impressive. But you'll want to dig deeper and immerse yourself in all the sonic and lyrical layers, because the band isn't afraid to plume the depths of darkness that humanity is capable of. It's murky stuff, but someone has to do it.

A Pale Horse Named Death arrived with And Hell Will Follow Me (2011). They have firmly implanted their roots in the metal scene with Lay My Soul to Waste. It s a metal album that headbangers who enjoy a walk on the darker side of life will end up revering and responding to.

"It's the same gloomy atmosphere," Abruscato continued. "If anything, it's darker. The artwork is darker, and people already think the first one is dark. We went further into that. The record itself, lyrics and sound, are darker. It's that progression."

I preordered this album because I knew I was going to love it based off their previous album. I was not disappointed! This album manages to be lush and dark at the same time. It's definitely heavier than the previous album. So far I'm having a hard time picking my favorite song because I love all of them. "Killer by Night," is demented and dark fun. "Dead of Winter," is haunting. Both "Growing Old," and "Cold Dark Mourning," is a melodic look at the realities to life and its impermanence. Sal Abruscato and Matt Brown have really outdone themselves. I look forward to many more albums from A Pale Horse Named Death. Keep up the great work guys!

It is a great thing to see a great vocalist with some thunder, I am a metal head yet the screaming nonsense gets old and shows a lack of true talent, A pale horse named death clearly has it together. Great choice!

A Pale Horse Named Death really blew me over with their second album! And Hell Will Follow Me was a stunning debut, with Lay My Soul To Waste picking up where the first left off, bringing in an even richer, fuller doom and metal sound. The lyrics sear into your brain and leave tunes rattling an echo for days after. Type O Negative fans will especially enjoy the slower, deeper dirges. Pick this album up and enjoy dark candy for your ears.

I bought A Pale Horse Named Death's first cd and was very impressed. to me it had a feel of Type O Negative meets Alice In Chains and I really enjoyed that. But just finished listening to this one and it has reverted to even more of a feeling of Type O than their first album. I know and they seem to know there will never be another Peter Steele may he Rest In Peace, but this is a very good tribute to the whole Type O Negative Era from some of the people that knew it best as they lived it as some of memebers of the former Type O. A Pale Horse Named Death, I don't believe they are trying to be Type O, but the will keep Type O and Peter's memory alive with albums like this. So please keep them coming forth. AAA+++ Great Cd!!!

Before "Lay My Soul to Waste" was recommended to me, I had not heard of A Pale Horse Named Death. After listening to the song samples on Amazon, I was very excited to hear the whole album which did not disappoint. Comparisons can be made to Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath with the vocal harmonies leaning more towards AiC. The music is heavy and drone-y and each song is well written and enjoyable. This is APHNDs second album, and, if you picked up the first one and, like me, were less than impressed, give "Lay My Soul to Waste" a try. The new album is much better than its predecessor.

I bought this album last weekend and just recieved it on monday, popped it in and gave it a spin, then a second then a third...etc,etc. I can't detail it alot cuz that will ruin your experience but each song is hauntingly excellent. Amazing album every song is a 10. Such sadness seers through your speakers. My favorite songs are Dead of Winter just such a beautifully hauntingly song there. The Devil Came With A Smile is another one that i just keep hitting repeat on,such an amazing hard song that totally has something to say, hey thats the rockstar life ya know? DMSLT is great too.
Go buy it!

This album and band remind me of three other fantastic bands. The first being the great Black Sabbath.Secondly,Alice In Chains and lastly the very much missed Type O Negative. Most of all it reminds me of A Pale Horse Named Death. Not a whole lot to add to that.Good album if you like dark,mid-paced rock music.

It's a dark, gritty, melodic, moody album that'll darken anyone's day...in a good way. The songs are solid (really, excellent) throughout. This has been in constant rotation since I purchased it. It's a step up from their debut, and seems (sounds) like more of a cohesive album than a collection of great songs (which was my one minor beef with their previous album). All in all...this is well worth the money.
