About the Author
R. Kelly, the king of R&B, makes music of epic proportions. After 18 years of stardom, the prolific multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist continues to forge an artistic path that caters to fantasy and captures the hearts of adoring fans. This is, in essence, how an artist sells over 34 million records, and wears the crown of a king. It is this uncanny ability to compose countless classics and deliver electrifying live performances that defines everything that is essential R. Kelly. It’s why he is the recipient of multiple Grammy, Billboard, BMI, and American Music Awards. R. Kelly lives and produces music out of his Chocolate Factory Studio in the heart of Chicago.

The above quote, which begins "Dominoes Up", the final chapter of Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, perfectly captures the essence of its author, R&B legend Robert "R." Kelly. This is a quote that should have been plastered on the very first page of Soulacoaster, for, as much as it explains about R. Kelly the artist and Robert Kelly the man, it shows even more truth about the book itself--and what a personal, uniquely R. Kelly book it is.
The first thing you notice about Soulacoaster is its size. It weighs about 3 pounds and resembles a coffee table book more than a novel or typical autobiography. Then you open the book. There are pictures. Words change fonts, sizes, and colors seemingly at random. Some pages are full of words. Others are black with 4 words on them. Every so often, you'll encounter a completely blank page. It's all over the place.
If this sounds like a mess, that's because it is--but it's a mess that makes sense. In Act I of the book, "Back in the Day", Kelly talks about his childhood and what led him to pursue a career in music. Kelly specifically expands on 2 things: his dyslexia and his ability to "channel" music and thoughts. Since a young age, Kelly has not been able to read, yet has had an overwhelming volume of ideas (musical or otherwise) flowing through his head.
All of this comes through in the very structure of Soulacoaster. There's a straightforward, easy-to-follow narrative in the book, sure, but it's unfiltered Kelly*.Read more ›
just like with his music you never know what to expect and he pours alot of his soul into this book. from the southside of Chicago and hustling to making it big and then yet always staying Humble. Kellz always keeps it real. he talks about all the influences on his Music career and also his personal life. the Lord, family, friends are key and you can feel that in the book.
he cracks me up the Brother is funny cat.however he is serious all at once a great balance.
i love the quote on the back of the book about his Musical Dominance "Arugably the Most important R&B figure of the 1990's and 2000's Rolling Stone. No Argument from me because he dominated like so few have ever.
however he stays grounded. he keeps that fire buring in his creative soul and yet has balance with what he does and says. a great read that takes you from Chicago to hollywood and everywhere in between.
he believed he could fly and also be liberated and balance things out and he has conquered that.
for fans of the man this is a must have book, even the haters gotta give it up for the King of modern R&B. however musically he is beyond R&B because R.kelly reminds me of Ray Charles in that you know anything he does musically he is goingto make it do what it do.

The pace words come to live its perfect. Chapter after chapter, we get to understand the man behind the icon. Each chapter builds up on the prior.
His encounters with MJ, Tupac, BIG are all here. Its a hell of a memoir. A true Soulacoaster.
Glad Kells is only 45, the music will keep on playing for a long time to come.
Great memoir. Its absolutely worth the reading.

I love the man's music, but this must be the worst written book I have ever read. The attractive layout helped, as does my interest in what made R. Kelly what he is. Read morePublished 7 months ago by Jemuel Gardner
