The Undead Unit Series:
About the Author
Markie Madden was born August 19, 1975, in Midland, Texas. She grew up in the small town of Flushing, Michigan. While in high school, she took creative writing and was a photographer for the school newspaper. In 1993, she won the National Quill and Scroll Society award for best photo in a high school paper. She began writing her first novel, Once Upon a Western Way, while still attending school. Markie is now married with two teenage daughters, three rescue dogs, and her horse, Athena, who is featured on the cover of her horse care guide, Keeping a Backyard Horse. She tried many times over the years to publish her novel, first on her own, and then hiring a literary agent, all without success. In early 2012, after getting her first smart phone and e-reader application, Nook, she discovered the world of self-publishing through a website called Smashwords. She finally published Once Upon a Western Way through this distributor in April, 2012. In the late spring of 2013, Markie came down with a mysterious illness, which was ultimately diagnosed as leukemia (AML specifically). She underwent a rigorous treatment of chemotherapy, during which, at one point, her life was endangered. While she was hospitalized, an old high school friend who is also a published author reconnected with her. Since cancer and the treatment of cancer forced her out of the traditional workforce, Markie turned her attention back to the world of writing. By December of 2014, Markie was the successful publisher of three books, her first published work, Once Upon a Western Way, now available in print as well as e-format, as well as a self-help guide to horse care, Keeping a Backyard Horse, available in print and e-format, and her cancer memoir, My Butterfly Cancer, available in print, e-format, and audiobook. Her other two will soon be available in audiobook format as well. Markie has founded Metamorph Publishing, in order to publish her own books, and she is now working with two other independent authors as well. Currently, Markie lives in the small town of Fisk, Missouri, with her family, her dogs, and her horse. She is still writing and is working on a crime/paranormal series called The Undead Unit Series. Book one of the series, Fang and Claw, is now available. The second book of the series, Souls of the Reaper, is expected out in 2016, along with a thriller novel entitled Cured Delusions. From the very first page, the story line grabs your attention with a scene from the villain’s perspective. The action doesn’t slow as Lacey begins noticing disturbances across the city and when these disturbances turns violent then the Undead Unit is on the case. Kazz isn’t introduced to the reader until a later date and she is totally likable from her love for speed and her aggression against perpetrators. All three collaborate, each bringing a unique set of skills and talents that compliments one another. However, even with all their talents, this case is nothing like they had ever seen or would likely to see again. They call on help from others in specialty fields and even that isn’t enough.
So you may wonder, was the resolution satisfactory to the complications of the story?
Oh, absolutely! I can’t tell you or even hint at what happens to bring the resolution because that would be unfair to both the reader and the author.
The author, Mrs. Madden, has an extensive knowledge of police procedure and has expertly woven the complexities of this story into a well-rounded and developed story.
I highly recommend that if you even think you might enjoy a mystery such as this, you should give it a try. I read many Indie authors and Markie Madden's, Undead Unit Series, has captivated me with the professional cover, interior layout, and a developed story. Vampires, Werewolves, Shifters, and more are combined into a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Don't miss her first book in the series, Fang and Claw. Highly recommended.
A rogue Reaper is stealing souls, seeking power for himself. The Undead Unit team must find the rogue before he creates a society with no morals and no restraint. Will they be successful or will there be chaos?
I remain impressed by Ms. Madden's knowledge and use of police procedure and the methods used to find the focus of their investigation. The elusiveness of the Reaper provides fascinating moments in this thrilling story. Well done. 5 stars.
People are going crazy and crimes are on the rise. The hunt for the reason leads to trying to catch a rogue reaper who is stealing souls. Soulless people are wreaking havoc in Dallas but it isn't just Dallas. Worldwide the crime statistics are up. Lacey and Colton along with a shapeshifter, who is new to the force, investigate. They bring in outside consultants with expertise regarding reapers, including a doctor who is a reaper, to determine how to find the rogue reaper responsible. The methods used to find the rogue reaper are unique yet believable for the world Ms. Madden has created. Her understanding of police procedures lends the story credibility, making it all the more realistic. The use of science in combination with supernatural abilities makes sense for the criminal investigation and capture of the antagonist.
The book was a page turner for me and I was totally engrossed. I finished this book in one day. I didn't stop reading until I was finished. The characters and plot both are well developed. I could feel the frustration and impatience of the protagonists and had absolutely no sympathy for the antagonist. He was the kind of character you have reason to hate. The newest addition to the team, the shapeshifter, is an interesting character and I hope to see more of her in future books.
Souls of the Reaper had just the right pace and tensions were high throughout the investigation, just as you would expect. There was a little humor sprinkled in that would be expected of people who have to work together and from family. I found this a thoroughly entertaining story. This is a great paranormal crime drama. I look forward to more in this series. I love these characters. I hope Ms. Madden has a lot more stories of their adventures planned for the future.
The book is suitable for teens and adults.
The story is more of a character interaction between the two teammates' conflicting interactions while they try to solve their cases than it is a typical vampire slash werewolf battle.
This is an excellent detective story, but could use more action using the two character's undead abilities.
Over two hundred pages of action and, edge of your seat, suspense.
Rookie, Kazz, joins Lacey and Colton as they race against time to bring down the rogue reaper, who's stealing souls.
Kazz fits into the team perfectly and adds an extra dimension to the supernatural crime fighting unit,
while Lacey and Colton's personalities continue to develop as the story progresses.
I am now eagerly waiting for book 3.
