SOUND CITY--REAL TO REEL is a brand new collection of all-new all-original songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session on that console after it was reinstalled in Grohl and his Foo Fighters' own 606 Studios. The new tracks--featuring an amazing and idiosyncratic cast of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Grohl's former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters bandmates, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Trent Reznor, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford of Rage Against The Machine and more--passionately exemplify SOUND CITY's celebration of the human element of musicianship and recording in an increasingly digital world.
SOUND CITY, the film, was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Guns and Roses, Metallica, NIN, Rage Against The Machine and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.
Grohl's personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana's breakthrough album, Nevermind. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl's life.

Unfortunately, and like many other listeners, I was very disappointed with the audio quality of this album, primary due to its' compressed dynamic range. I would score the music as 4 stars out of 5, but the lack of DR throughout the entire spectrum of frequency responses is a bummer, resulting in a 2-star rating of sound quality. I just couldn't hear any clear, open and crisp highs or low end bass; and mid-ranges were fair, at best.
Nonetheless, I applaud Grohl's efforts to purchase, relocate and recondition the big NEVE console. We can only hope that he can successfully utilize and continue the true value of the top-notch, analogue recording equipment he has acquired.
As a consumer of many recently remastered, and re-pressed LP vinyl, I should also mention that my copy of these two LPs were perfectly pressed with very quiet vinyl and perfectly pressed center spindle-holes. Regardless of price, virtually every "audiophile" repressing exhibits problems that were thankfully missing from this recording.
That all being said, they do lose one star for the loudness war.
Dave, you stood up, shook your fist in the air and had a great idea: Make a rock record with some of the most influential people in music and do it on tape.
Then you stepped off the soap box and allowed the mastering engineers to have free reign over your mixes rather than demanding the dynamics be kept at their best.
As much as I love this album, I would have a hard time turning it off if the dynamics were anything like I imagine them to be in the studio. Everything has been squashed to within 6db or so of actual range. That can be fatiguing.

The vinyl quality is good and noticeably denser than most standard production LP's, with no pops and cracks that made CD's such an attraction when they appeared beside vinyl in the early 80's. One LP had a slight vertical wobble but this did not affect the playing quality. The only iffy bit was the shrink wrap that possibly contributed to the wobbly vinyl. The Lp;s come in plastic lined paper sleeves with additional card inner liners. The outer cover is made from good quality card, but the combination of paper sleeves, thicker vinyl and thick card outer makes for a snug fit for the contents.
The sound quality is good but one or two of the mixes are not as clear as I felt they should be ("Heaven And All" seems to have little clarity between instruments compared to tracks of a similar pace and BMRC are usually pretty good at this on their own work). The Stevie Nicks track "You Can't Fix This" is positively smokin'! There are no bad tracks on the LP and given the variety of musicians playing, it comes out as better than could be expected. Enjoy at high volume!
It also shows that Dave Grohl is also turning out to be a fine director - this film leading to further fine work on the Sonic Highways films... the man shows no sign of slowing down!
If you like good rock played by experienced musicians this is for you , I highly recommend .
The CD is great - quality is good as expected
