Taking sound design beyond basically filling in appropriate sound effects takes a lot of thought and labor. David Sonnenschien's simply named "Sound Design" is a treasure trove of ideas for crafting better sound for cinematic storytelling.
This is definitely more of a theoretical book rather than a practical one. You won't learn much about how to record sounds or specifically craft a soundtrack. Instead you'll get scores of information on how our brains interpret voice, music and other types of sound and how to use that to create better sound design.
The book is filled with "try this" sidebars made up of little experiments that are designed to open your mind and give you ideas on how to approach sound in film. I can't say I've really tried them, but they've given me a lot to think about.
There are also plenty of accounts from legendary sound designers such as Ben Burtt & Gary Rydstrom on how they used concepts like the ones in this book in countless Hollywood blockbusters.
Towards the end the book gets a little more practical, with ideas on how to augment sound effects to create more emotional impact.
This is a great book to keep handy whenever you're stuck for ideas. Just give it flip through when you're in need of a little sonic inspiration.

The first chapter takes away from all of the information later in the book. It is 52 pages of absolute nonsense. The information is good past the first chapter, but that chapter is horrendous. Worst piece of literature I’ve ever read. He talks in circles for 50 pages then establishes all the information in a more useful way in the other chapters. Do yourself a favor and rip out the first chapter and start with Expanding Your Creativity.

The author has a wonderful description of how to analyze the possible sound design for a film from breaking down elements in the script all the way to deciding on how to focus the audience on events and objects by altering the characteristic sounds (timbre) according to acoustic phenomenon and Gesalt theory. A thought-provoking read.

I am using this textbook for my Production Sound class at a school of higher education, where I teach. It is thorough in covering all of the concepts and aspects to producing good audio for video production. It covers the combination of multiple elements, like foley, effects, music, dialogue, and just about everything else that you can think of.

I was required to purchase this textbook for a sound design class in a specialized film program at the University of Central Florida. I have very limited knowledge regarding audio and this textbook explained it simplistically in a way that I could understand and helped me on a practical level. The delivery was speedy and the book was in great condition. However, if this was not a required text for my class I would not have purchased it.

Great book. Music and Sound design was one of the few areas I didn't cover in film school and I totally regret it. I was a directing Major, with an editing and cinematography minor, and I also focused on screenwriting, and I love it all, but music and sound design seems to me to be one of the greatest tools for developing tone. This book has been a great way for me to start this portion of my education.

Sound Design by David Sonnenschien:
This written work is in so many different way's such a help to either experienced or up and coming Creative Sound designers with handy tips and shortcuts, It is easy to follow and gives a great insight into the though processes involved in making sound productions and how the simplest of things can be made into some weird and and wonderful sounds.
As I am studying Creative Sound Production at University it was already on my must read\purchase book list on the subject matter, a decision that I am glad I made to purchase the book as it has helped me in so many ways to understand the subject and how to use basic everyday items in my creative sound processes and projects.
It Is a must but book, well written and informative, I would recommend in deed I have recommended the book to the university faculty to be added to the departments or universities library for future use by other likeminded students.
