My rating is for this new edition. It is significantly smaller in format than the first edition and contrary to the Amazon listing and the book jacket itself, it is NOT "completely updated and in full color throughout"...the primary reason I purchased it. There is a new forward (less than a full page of text) which is the largest revision. The other "updates" include adding dates for people who have passed since the first publication. As far as I could tell on my first perusal, there is no major update to the primary body of the book. The photos are still PREDOMINANTLY black and white. Even the photo which graced the cover of the first edition in full color is presented here in black and white. Of those photos which were replaced with color equivalents, they all look like 2nd generation scans or worse...many have artifacts or tonal variations which make them look like they were pulled from the internet at low resolution rather than being pulled from the 20th Century Fox archives. While it's understandable that any photos contributed by cast members or crew might be blurry or grainy, it's pretty unforgivable for professional color stills taken on set to be presented in such poor shape. Concept art which has been shown in color on various video releases of the Sound of Music are presented here in black and white.
Whoever was responsible for this "update" has diminished the book and the marketing of it is deceitful. If you have the previous edition, there is no need to purchase this. If you do not own it, you may not be as disappointed by the new edition's shortcomings. Just know that the claims of "full color throughout" refers to a book that is still 3/4 black and white.
