The characters are developed perfectly in this book. Gia is strong, a fighter, and a survivor. Ethan is a sociopath and just plain crazy. And Derek ? He's one of those dream men that every woman dreams about. I enjoyed the interaction of Gia and Derek, and understood the relationship between Ethan and Gianna. It was abusive, it was violent, it was very good writing. The idea of taking on this subject was a good one, and the story fit into the psyche's of abuse victims everywhere.
Technically, all the parts were there. There was a good balance between narration and dialogue (show me, tell me), but there were misuses of words that shouldn't have happened. When an author writes, the first thing they need is an excellent command of the English language, and that includes definitions and spelling, as well as the meaning of the words they are using. My pet peeve - discreetly is not spelled discretely, but I'll blame that on either the editor or the proofer. You cannot use Word to do your spellcheck because there are words it cannot catch. Discretely is one of them. Then there were words whose meanings were misunderstood by the writer. For example using the word ROUSE in place of RUSE made the sentence null. Using Tea instead of Details, ended one sentence so that it made no sense. "I just him" instead of I just saw him, "Make it out his words" instead of "make out his words". Yes, I'm picky when I'm reading. I am picky because any and all of these mistakes do two things for me. First they disrupt my reading, which I really hate since I don't have the time I'd love to have to read. And the second thing? It makes me wonder who is proofing and editing the book. I know I'm a walking dictionary, I get it. And I know I'm hard on anyone who writes. I feel that someone has to be tough on them because without the command of words, what does any author have?
Despite having to stop and start on sentences throughout the book, I liked it. I've read most of what this author has written and she has a fine storytelling ability. She just needs to fine tune the words. 3-1/2-4 stars for this. And I have to add here, while I'm editing my review. I really dislike Amazon for classifying this as a "critical" review, using the word "critical" to mean negative. It was not. Three stars is I liked it, with four reserved for a good book and five stars, a great best selling, out of this world book. My three and one half stars is not negative, it is meant to tell the author where there could be improvement.
This is a very well written book. Gia marries Ethan who is an abusive man. He didn't show this side of him till after he married Gia.
She finally escapes from hi., lands in NY and now she's Val. She runs into Derek a man she met at her wedding. He treats her so well. She can't believe how different their friendship is than her previous one. They have obstacles with her husband. But Derek will not let her go.
This is a very emotional story.
