Beth Hammond's debut, The Sound of the Stones, delivers a story within a story. Modern times, and the ancient past intersect as the story unfolds. When Frankie stumbles onto a mysterious book, her world changes forever as she begins to read about Ashra, a girl from the distant past.
Hammond has created a world that evokes elements made famous by the 80's classics such as The Never Ending Story, The Dark Crystal, and Legend. The tale continues in book two, The Rise of Fire, and concludes with The Broken Bind.
5 stars! Reviewed By Chris Fischer for Readers' Favorite
In a great new book by talented author Beth Hammond, The Sound of the Stones, readers are invited into a fantastic world filled with secrets, interesting beings, adventure and excitement. Our protagonist, Frankie, receives a book that tells the story of an era long ago, forgotten in the annals of time, in which people are held prisoner by half human creatures. Ashra, a young woman with a gift, isn't sure if she has what it will take to free humankind, but if she doesn't try, all might be lost. How are Frankie and Ashra connected? You'll need to read the book to find out!
I so, so enjoyed The Sound of the Stones. Author Beth Hammond has done an absolutely fantastic job in creating characters that her readers will relate to, connect with, and continue to think about long after the story is done. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I'm not sure what is. Her world creation abilities are second to none, and readers will feel as if they are absolutely a part of the story as they are reading. The main piece of advice I have for readers, besides being sure to pick up this book, is to have enough time set aside to read it from beginning to end; you'll not want to put it down once you start! I highly recommend this book to any reader who loves a strong work of fantasy with a good Christian message. I certainly hope that author Beth Hammond is hard at work on her next offering. I, for one, will definitely be in line to read it!

I do think that some scenes and characters would benefit from some editing or further elaboration to help express their qualities more but other than that, there’s not much about the read that I personally would change.
This is the first book that I’ve read from author Beth Hammond, but it will certainly not be the last. I look forward to seeing how the Trilogy plays out and I plan on starting on the next book in the series as soon as I get the time. Highly recommended.
The author's voice as a storyteller is strong and her sense of humour comes through clearly. This was a solid introduction to the series with a satisfying open-ended finish that doesn't gut-wrench like a cliff-hanger would.
So, why "only" 3 stars? The writing style and constant descriptive started out as fresh and exciting, but was *so* strong all the way through that it became overwhelming. The characters are constantly eye-waggling, arm gesturing, etc. And, within larger groups, *every* character having some sort of verbal, facial, or physical response (or even a lack of response) *every* time got to be exhausting for me to read. As an introvert, I actually needed to walk away for a while, so I could recover. By the end, as much as I like the story and characters, I wasn't interested in reading another book like this. I don't know if others will have the same reaction I did, but I wanted to put this out there for others who find themselves sucked into books and emotionally affected by them.
I pre ordered the second book.
It's that good
