Refurb Unit - Cambridge SoundWorks The Soundworks II Speaker System for Computer, PC, Mac, iPod, iPhone is a versatile, three-piece amplified speaker system composed of two very small satellite speakers and a compact bandpass subwoofer. The system provides a total system RMS power of 36 Watts.
The SoundWorks II features a compact yet sophisticated sixth-order bandpass, downward-firing subwoofer. A 4" active driver rigidly mounted in the center of the subwoofer enclosure pressurizes an 6.5" radiator at the base of the enclosure. The 6.5" bass radiator features a .5" wide butyl rubber edge surround for distortion-free, high-level bass output down to 50 Hz.
The Subwoofer features cutting edge technology with a high efficiency Class-D amplifier to deliver big sound while remaining cool and eco friendly with low power consumption and CEC (Green) compliance.
The new MC30 satellites feature a light-weight transducer delivering high accuracy, along with magnetic shielding. The asymmetrically curved satellite cabinets all but eliminate distortion-causing reflections known as "standing waves."
The satellites and sub combine to create lifelike music and video sound. Never before has such a small speaker system produced such big sound. The sonic accuracy is evident at all output levels, making the SoundWorks II useful in a wide range of typical home applications.
The SoundWorks II reproduces superb music and movie sound in small home theater environment, or produces thunderous output while fragging unwanted invaders in the latest PC or video game.
The system is supplied with desktop stands for the satellites and a wired remote volume control (including headphone jack).

If you're using onboard audio (like so many of us do) you can tweak your settings within the Realtek file. The bass is there "if" you have hardwood or tile floors as it's a down-firing subwoofer. Carpet will simply soak-up the bass. I would have liked to have seen CSW offer a 2-year warranty, like Logitech. For $74.99 & shipping (mine was $14.50 for S/H) it's a pretty solid deal. I must admit I really considered the Cerwin Vega XD3 2.0 offering, but I felt the satellite's were too large for me. Plus, the left speaker (that has the amp) runs too hot. Overall you will not get crackling sound & decent volume levels from this set-up. It's not going to break any sound volume records, but you'll enjoy the 2.1 set-up just the same.
Do not expect wall shaking base to fill a 25x25 foot living space. Its not happening. This type of performance is in the realm of 500 watt amplifiers.
Be reasonable about gain - both overall volume and subwoofer settings. About halfway is right. Use the volume controls on you PC for fine adjustments. New owners of the Cambridge SoundWorks II 2.1 Speaker System may find the subwoofer lacking. Low frequency sounds should be heard, but not localized. In other words the ears should not be able to identify the source of the sound. The easiest way to hear the effects of the subwoofer is to turn it ON and OFF. ON will easily convince you that the subwoofer is doing what it is supposed to do.
I mounted the speakers on the wall about 4 feet off the floor. Listening position while seated is a bit off axis. The downward facing subwoofer sits in the corner of the room on solid wood floor NOT carpet.
I tested the Cambridge SoundWorks II 2.1 Speaker System with an xfinity play of the TV show Luther: plenty of ambient sound effects such as emergency vehicle sirens, large room acoustics, gun shoots and explosions.
And for the tests above, the results are impressive. I am pleased with the $130 spent for the Cambridge SoundWorks II 2.1 Speaker System. A excellent value.
I have ordered a Logitech unit and will update this review with that info in the event I like that system better...but for now, two out of two reviews are saying, keep shopping and ignore this unit.
Hope this helps as you make your decision.
** Update 6/28/11: I ordered the Logitech unit Logitech THX-Certified Speaker System Z623 which is $30 less than this Cambridge Soundworks unit, and it's FAR SUPERIOR....much better bass, better frequency response. And superior speaker wire / quality of build.
