First, I must say that I prefer "old In Flames" albums, up to Clayman. For some reason, I did liked A Sense of Purpose a lot and enjoy some of the tracks from Sounds of a Playground Fading. But then came Siren Charms and I lost interest again. Therefore, I had avoided this release, since more than one third of the setlist comes from that album.
I decided to order the BluRay after watching The Chosen Pessimist's video on YouTube (amazingly haunting offering). Really happy now with that decision. This is an absolutely awesome live performance from start to finish. You can feel a lot of the power and energy of the "old days". I was surprised by how much I liked the songs from SC included in this show. So much that I even went back to listening to that album online, to see if it could change my mind. I din't. But now the difference was clear: the studio album feels overproduced, over-compressed, bland. It even has that weird St Anger-ish drum sound. On the other hand, the live album/video brings more of a raw experience: Drums really sound like drums, Anders's singing is more aggressive and visceral, and the guitars have sort of a lower/deeper tone, all of which makes everything WAY heavier than in the original studio recording, more METAL.
So, if you are an "old In Flames" fan, but you also like at least some of their newer stuff, you'll definitely enjoy Sounds From the Heart of Gothenburg.
