Interesting book, but not particularly helpful. I would like to visit some of the churches reviewed because they sound like the music would be outstanding. I would like to know the names of the churches reviewed and their location (city) as well.

Kroeker's book is an interesting case study of 9 different successful congregational music programs. Readers will find different philosophies of music leadership, as well as practical models of staff relationships. The most helpful aspect of the book was seeing that there is no panacea for a one-size-fits-all program; each staff made appropriate contextual decisions that has brought vibrancy and energy into their church music. Large and small congregations, inner-city and suburban, there is something in this book for every church pastor and musician.

I think anyone involved in church music should read this book. This book points out the importance of thought, planning and real care about the worship of God to create meaningful worship experiences.

This may be a fine book for churches that want to continue doing 18th and 19th century style music, with a choir that sings Ave Verum Corpus and maybe a bit of African rhythm if the congregation is ethnically diverse. You should know that the only use of the word "band" comes when the music directors talk about the marching bands of their school years, and the only use of the word "contemporary" is a story that ends, "We don't want THAT".

So if you, like me, bought the book hoping for a forward-looking survey of what churches are doing across the musical spectrum, you'll be disappointed. It's a book for those whose offerings, excellent though they may be, only sound old-fashioned.
