I seriously cannot say enough wonderful things about this story. It touched a spot in my heart and won't forget Lotte & Sam anytime soon.
I went in blind with this one. I didn't read the blurb, so I had no idea about the connection that Lotte and Sam had, or the secrets they both held from everyone they loved. My heart broke for Lotte from the very first pages of her story, and continued to shatter throughout.
They were both stubborn with their secrets and their feelings for one another. This was a slow burn, and it was a good one. Sometimes you get the burn and it doesn't make sense. You feel like the characters are just being stupid and there's no need for one. But in Lotte and Sam's case, it was appropriate. They both needed to come to terms with their issues, and learn how to overcome them on their own. They knew they needed to, but they didn't know how, so they just held their secrets in for as long as they could.
Lotte knew she wanted an adventure in her life to help her cope with her losses and her compulsions, but her trip to America only made them worse. In a moment where she lets go and lets the music in her heart lead her body to where its most comfortable, an accident happens that cuts her adventure short. Or so she thought. The moment Sam ends up at her hotel door, their story blew me away.
There's not much else I can say without spoiling the book. I'm just so beyond happy that Barbetti wrote their story and did them justice. I felt so connected to Lotte, where my heart broke when hers did and soared when she found her happiness.
I was hooked from the very beginning and I didn't want to stop until I devoured it all. Barbetti always has that effect on me. Her words, her characters, her stories. They are always phenomenal.
Right from the start there is sadness and heartache in this poignant romance. This certainly doesn’t make the journey for Lotte and Sam any easier, but it makes the time they do spend together all the more fulfilling. Their struggles are real and totally relevant. Everyone has insecurities and Whitney touches on them with heart and compassion. Lotte and Samson are flawed, both harboring secrets they struggle to keep from their loved ones. They aren’t perfect and I think it makes them easier to relate to. The dual POV with Lotte and Sam allows you to feel the anxiety they both have with hiding their compulsions.
To me, this was not your typical love story and I really appreciated that. The setting was unique and the main characters were refreshing and real. The supporting characters are just as wonderful, so entwined in Lotte and Sam’s lives you can’t have one without the other. The way Lotte and Sam support one another when their secrets are revealed is honest and touching. You feel their pain and worry about them when they give in to their emotions and share their innermost secrets with one another.
This was a beautiful love story filled with emotion and the hope for second chances. We all make mistakes and forgiveness can be one of the greatest hurdles, but with it can come some of the greatest rewards. This story has just the right amount of angst, passion and redemption. I look forward to what Whitney has in store for us next!
Stand Alone: Yes
Part of Series: ?? The secondary characters in this book are featured in The Weight of Life but I'm not sure if there is a series name. And you don't have to read The Weight of Life to enjoy The Sounds of Secretes (but I feel like I want to)
POV: Lotte and Sam
Steam Level: Slow burn
The Sounds of Secrets was brilliantly written. It is a gripping look into grief and anxiety. About the journey to find yourself. And the secrets that we keep. After finishing this book (which I whipped through) I needed a bit to process and digest it before leaving my review without giving away the secrets of this book. I found myself highlighting little passages that stood out to me throughout. I could feel Lotte's grief, her anxiety, her compulsions, and her relief. I could feel Sam's self-loathing and his battles with his demons. Both are relatable, because I've felt them myself. And I think that that is what makes this book fantastic - the realistic thoughts and actions of these characters. That together they are stronger, still fighting but on the same team. There was little to no BS drama and whining - Sam and Lotte fell separately and got back up together. I loved it and would love to see more of these characters in the future.
