2009 release from the veteran British Electronic rockers. Eclectic and energized, the band's new release is their most dazzling and diverse album in decades. Recorded in Santa Barbara and New York, Depeche Mode returned to using a lot of vintage gear, from analogue synthesizers to drum machines, in order to conjure up the retro-futuristic arrangements featured on the album. Lyrically the release contains many of the group's enduring obsessions plus more overt black humor than any of their previous collections. The release marks a reunion between the band and producer Ben Hillier, who worked with the band on Playing The Angel. Features the single 'Wrong'. Mute.

I didn't know who this band was, until Playing the Angel debuted and I just had to buy it, but I accidentally bought Violator instead of Playing the Angel. I was furious, because I wasn't use't to the difference of the sound and threw it away in my closet for years.
I didn't appreciate them until I met a DM fan who introduced Only when I lose Myself, then I gave them another shot and since then I realized that I actually like all there music. It's FUNNY how time changes.
How I gave Sounds of the Universe another shot was this... I listened to its hidden tracks Ghost, Light and Oh Well, then eventually I heard their remixes for SOTU. My opinion is some of their remixes are better then some of their originals.
What I've learned from them is I can't judge what they make so quickly. I need to give them a lot of chances, until I finally can decide for sure.
They truly are the best. And without them music is nothing to me, but the other exceptions are: 16 Volt, Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead and The Doors.
P.S. Close your eyes and only pay attention to their lyrics. It helps sometimes.
Recommended buy, Have 2 other Depeche Mode CDs. "Playing the Angel" & "The Singles 81>85 - like the "driving sound" insistent... worth the $$. Buy it.
I have tickets to see DM live here in Las Vegas this coming August...I'll be counting the days!
That said, the deluxe edition is beyond what any fan could have reasonably hoped for.
Worth it? Absolutely.
The extra CDs are great, my complaint against the 2 disc catalog reissues was that I could not readily listen to the bonus tracks in my car, so having the extras on CD here is nice. The demo disc is quite nice too, more demos are apparently forthcoming.
The DVD extras are all top notch. It is refreshing to see the lads enjoying themselves so much in the studio live tracks.
The books are beautiful (I must admit, I had some real concerns about them when this was announced...no more)
The other bits are nice, very reminiscent of the "A Question Of Lust" cassingle special edition I bought over 20 years ago.
If you are a fan, get this now, before you kick yourself when they've gone really pricey.
