Editorial Reviews
This will be a 7CD box called Soundtracks, with the usual ‘Complete Albums' clamshell box and card mini-jackets.
The cover art has been personally worked on by Ry with Tornado Design- the group behind the distinctive look found on several of Cooder's recent studio albums, as well as Rhino's 2008 anthology, The UFO Has Landed.
Here are the albums that will be included:
· The Long Riders (1980)
· Music From Alamo Bay (1985)
· Paris, Texas (1985)
· Blue City (1986)
· Crossroads (1986)
· Johnny Handsome (1989)
· Trespass (1993)

A couple of the later soundtracks are just not as strong as some of the earlier work, but that often happens. The packaging is sparse but exemplary (a retrospective without a booklet? Really?). I do adore the mini-LP format, and these are very well done, even if one literally needs a magnifying glass to read the liner notes on a couple of them.
My biggest complaint is that these are pretty much straight reissues, with no significant changes from the original LPs or CDs. I was so hoping they'd see fit to include the Steve Vai/ Cooder guitar duel from Crossroads, but no such luck!
overall, well worth the price, but that omission really chafes.
A very tempting collection of all the seven soundtracks albums issued on, or through, Warner Bros. where the music was produced (and played) by Ry Cooder.
I already had CD versions of three of these soundtracks and rated them all very highly so the question for me was is this box worth buying for the four soundtracks I did not have and had not heard.
Based on one listen I'm certain the answer is most certainly yes!
I can't imagine anyone who likes Ry Cooder being disappointed with any of the easier to find albums here like 'The Long Riders', 'Paris, Texas', and 'Crossroads'. The versions in the box either equal or (in the case of 'The Long Riders') sound even better than the original CD editions. The cardboard sleeves are all very neat too. 'Paris, Texas' has a different sleeve than the one I am familiar with.
'Alamo Bay' was originally issued on Slash Records (1985) and was one title that I have always wanted to get hold of. It has, as a stand-alone album, been out of print for years, so I was well pleased to find it included in this box. This soundtrack has a varied mix of different musical styles, and all have their own special attractions. Although I have only heard it once I like what I am hearing.
'Blue City' (1986) is another album with a varied mix of musical styles. It opens with a rocker, followed by a slow groove instrumental that features some lovely steel drum sounds. I don't think Ry Cooder plays on the third track, a pop song performed by a band called True Believers. The record also includes a Ry Cooder version of the 1958 Johnny Cash song 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town'.
A lot of the very impressive 'Johnny Handsome' soundtrack (released in 1989) was featured on the superb double CD 'Music By Ry Cooder', and after hearing the deep atmospheric pieces that were featured on that compilation getting hold of the entire album became a priority.
'Trespass' (originally issued on Sire in 1992) is the one album here that really will surprise a lot of people. This soundtrack features Jon Hassell on trumpet and is full of what sounds to me like industrial/experimental music (not a musical style you would associate with Ry Cooder). The record is notable for the inclusion of one cracking vocal track with killer lyrics - 'King Of The Street', and ends surprisingly with 'Party Lights', an out and out straight country song with Junior Brown on vocal.
All the CD soundtracks in this box have a great sound so no worries about the mastering.
The box itself is sturdy. There is no booklet - but that's no big deal when you can check online if you want or need any further info / reading material.
If you are after a bargain just check the price of the box and divide by 7 (then check the price of the stand alone CDs).
This collection is an excellent follow up to last year's wonderful 11 CD box >>Ry Cooder<< 1970 -1987.
Since the 1960s, Cooder has been producing music of an enormously eclectic range, from traditional to modern, on his own and in collaboration with the likes of Captain Beefheart, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Neil Young, David Lindley, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, The Chieftains, and The Doobie Brothers. He is clearly influenced by such deeply American traditions as bluegrass, delta blues, Tex-Mex, Dixieland, and gospel, but he blends them together with other musical strains (including Hawaiian, African, Latin, etc.) to create unique soundtracks.
This collection presents complete film scores from seven movies that Cooder scored in the 1980s and 1990s. They come on seven CDs in thin sleeves, contained in a sturdy case. Three of them ("The Long Riders," "Paris, Texas," and "Crossroads") are fine films in their own right. The others ("Alamo Bay," "Blue City," "Johnny Handsome," and "Trespass") are far less memorable, but the music is never less than inspired. The box is very different from the 1995 release "Music by Ry Cooder," a two-CD sampler from 11 different movies. Both are recommended; your choice, I suppose, depends on how big a fan you are. But if you love film music, you need Ry in your collection. He really is one of the greats.
Top reviews from other countries
With the box itself it is utilitarian, and is fit for the purpose intended. The albums are in the cardboard sleeves that copy the original LP's so expect eye strain if you try to read them, but personally I couldn't care less who the producer's assistant was or the name of the studio where it was recorded.
There is one slight drawback as the soundtrack album "Last Man Standing" is not included but that can be bought on its own (and I already had a copy of that anyway). So to anyone that appreciates the fine musical craftsmanship of Mr Ryland Cooder, or wants to discover it, then I think you would not be disappointed in this.
