I guess that's fitting since Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo makes his first appearance this season. South Park is a show that I never really saw until some time after it began on comedy central in 1997, but like many others, when I did see it I was hooked. This essential 3 DVD set includes the 13 episodes that make up Season one. Before this set arrived and before I owned DVDs (perish the thought!) I only had the first three VHS tape volumes totaling 6 episodes! So at that point I hadn't seen the majority of season one! I can still remember when there was so much talk that season sets wouldn't happen, but like Chef told Cartman - "You wait and you wait and you wait..." as did I and it finally came! Season one ran from August '97 to February '98 and includes the following:
Disc One:
01. Cartman gets an anal probe
02. Volcano
03. Weight Gain 4000
04. Big Gay Al's big gay boat ride

Disc Two:
05. An elephant makes love to a pig
06. Death
07. Pinkeye
08. Damien

Disc Three:

I see all the reviews are old and not for the blue ray edition, so let me be the first one to review the product listed which is the blue ray release. Yes it easily gets 5 stars. I was torn at first as to whether or not to get the first seasons of south park on blue ray or not and I am glad I did. To answer questions 1. Picture and animation quality is much improved on blue ray then the original on DVD or on TV way back when. 2. The full length non edited fireside chats with mat stone and trey parker are back and included on blue ray each one a little longer than the originals and funnier then hell. 3. All episodes are non edited to show the original episodes as to how they were meant to be seen or extended the new scenes and subtle changes make these classics funnier and more classic then ever. 4. now to answer the biggest question for people NO SEASON 1 EPISODES ARE NOT UNCENSORED the older episodes this early on did not have the technology to change or restore the audio, so as the creators state on the discs this is how they will stay forever, which really doesn't take anything away from it. But good news fans continuing on ONLY PART OF SEASON 2 WILL STILL BE CENSORED THE REST OF SEASON 2 AND ALL THE OTHER NEW EARLY SEASONS OF SOUTH PARK JUST RELEASED ON BLUE RAY ARE UNCENSORED, AS CARTMAN WOULD SAY, THAT KICKS ASS . So I hope this answers some of your questions, and this will forever be one of the all time classic animated comedies of all time. ENJOY.

Oh South Park, the staple of my teenage years. It's stood the test of time and still causes a lot of hearty chuckles all these years later. And now Cartman and co. are all presented here in fabulous high definition! Sweeeeet...

To the boxset. The presentation of this set is very nice. It comes in an outer cardboard sleeve with embossed glossy characters on the front. The inner case has nice glossy images from the series displayed on its outer. When unfolded you're presented with the two discs and descriptions for all episodes. It looks like a true collector's item and I'm very impressed with the packaging.

The episodes are presented in high definition and in 16:9, all except for the first episode which is presented in its original 4:3 format. Having listened to the commentary on this episode I learnt that this was due to the production method used for the first episode. It was produced entirely with craft paper and stop animation. All subsequent episodes where computer generated. Even though the quality of the first episode doesn't compare well to subsequent episodes, it is still much better than it has ever looked and is a vast improvement over the original. This can be said for all subsequent episodes too. Colours jump out of the screen and there are very few visual artefacts that I have noticed. As the series progresses, the quality of the animation gets much better too.

Swear words are censored, and you are told this as the disc loads, although plenty of minor swear words have escaped the bleeping. Think of the two most explicit swear words you can recall and they're the ones that are censored. This is how the episodes will "live forever", the disc informs us, as no uncensored track for these episodes exists, and I'm happy with that.

Extras are great. Each episode has an audio commentary with the creators and there's a couple of other tidbits too. The original "fireside chats" and other intros that were on the initial VHS releases are included, although they have been upscaled and do suffer from horrendous interlacing artefacts. It's nice to have them included though.

Having originally owned this series on VHS in the 90s it truly is a stunning leap in visual and audio quality and a must-buy for all fans of this legendary comedy series.
