Apocalyptic danger, epic romance, and a heart-stopping plot that will keep you turning pages deep into the night...
Reporters Daniel "Diggs" Diggins and Erin Solomon travel to Kentucky to look into the bizarre ritual murder of one of Diggs' oldest friends. But that single death is hardly the only bizarre occurrence in Justice: soon, power outages, explosions, standoffs, and conspiracy rock the small town, and fundamentalist preacher Jesup T. Barnel claims he knows the reason for the madness: The end times are upon them, and judgment comes fast and furious as the clock winds down in this occult thriller.

From the Author
When I set out to write SOUTHERN CROSS, I had a loose idea of what I wanted: I knew it would take place in Kentucky; I knew Diggs' past would figure significantly into unfolding events; and I knew that key elements of the conspiracy involving Erin's father would come to light. Beyond that, however, the entire novel was a mystery to me. I'm thrilled with what ultimately landed on the page, as I think it provides compelling background for readers looking for additional insight into the Diggs and Solomon dynamic, gives some tantalizing new information about the conspiracy, and -- most surprisingly for me -- shows a whole new side of Erin, as she struggles to come to terms with the violence she's encountered in the previous novels.
I love watching these characters as they evolve, and their relationships deepen and change over time. I hope readers will enjoy this latest installment of the Erin Solomon mysteries half as much as I've enjoyed writing it!
All the best,
Jen Blood

Jen Blood is the USA Today-bestselling author of two critically acclaimed, action-packed mystery series: The Erin Solomon Mysteries and the Flint K-9 Search and Rescue Mysteries. Both series feature strong, independent women who dominate in their chosen fields (Erin Solomon as an investigative reporter intent on learning the truth about her own past; Jamie Flint as a single mom, small business owner, and K-9 search and rescue trainer and handler).
In addition to her career as an author, Jen is also a freelance writer and certified dog trainer. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing/Popular Fiction from the University of Southern Maine, is a regular blogger with Maine Crime Writers, and leads workshops throughout New England on writing, editing, and independent publishing.
Jen taps into a background in freelance journalism in the heart of Midcoast Maine to write mysteries rich with atmosphere and action, with great characters, a hint of romance, and plots that will keep you guessing until the last page is turned. Her series has been hailed by critics and readers alike for its sharp wit and well-drawn characters. Unfortunately, for me the problem area overshadowed the quality of the writing. I have not read the first two books in this series, and Southern Cross does not work well as a stand-alone. A large thread of the plot here is drawn from the earlier books, to the degree that I never totally understood the point of what happened in this story. The author does her best to offer bits and pieces from the previous book(s), but it's not enough to grasp the concept in its entirety. I felt like something was always dangling just beyond my reach. Consequently, I didn't fully understand the characters or their motivations.
The way this book ended, it's obvious that the story will continue into book #4. We don't get closure with the plot.
If you read this series in order from start to finish, I have no doubt it could easily rate 5 stars. But I would not recommend reading this one on its own.
I tend to be drawn primarily to scifi/paranormal stories but the Erin Solomon books create images and scenes that cannot be resisted. Ms. Blood is particularly gifted at creating scenes that are disturbingly creepy! These are the only books that I have, on several occasions, spoken out loud to the characters! Fortunately no one other than my wife has been around at those moments. With Southern Cross there is one particular scene with Diggs and some snakes that made me sweat and squirm. I was doing a LOT of talking while reading that one, my wife thought I'd really lost it!
One result of reading these books is that I will never be visiting backwoods, rural areas without a SWAT team behind me. At least not at night!!
Blood is a fantastically engaging writer, using shifting first person points of view to great effect. Among other things, this allows her to draw on all five senses to vividly render her characters' internal experiences as well as the external world. The triangulated central relationship among Erin, Diggs, and dishy FBI agent Jack Juarez is thorny and real, which gives the book an added emotional heft. Blood has a great ear for dialogue, and her characters' wry observations, even in the throes of an impending apocalypse, manage somehow to both defuse and ratchet up the tension. It's a story that is both character and plot driven, which pretty much ensures that it's impossible to put down.

We follow this group as a childhood friend is murdered and his wife asks if Diggs will come and help her solve the mystery although Sol has to find him as after their previous encounter they have each gone their separate ways for a while and lost touch.
Shocking revelations abound from when Diggs and his childhood friends were involved in a bizarre religious ritual and which has now come back to haunt them all.
Sadistic, manipulative and terrifying this book is the better one out of the three, almost as if Jen finally got the guts to run with it instead of skirting around it so the subject matter wouldn't be too much.
As the clock ticks it's a race against time as people just disappear and no-one knows where they are. Predictions from the preacher tell us that it is start of Armageddon with no turning back, God is about to punish those who have failed him and the count-down begins.
With my religious background a book of this type does NOT influence me in the least, there are nutters out there and always will be but the Word of God is what is real and not some story dreamed up by zealous writer. That's my bit said...
The hooded stranger appears once again without his hood this time and Sol really starts to appreciate the nature of the man in all his terrifying glory and what he stands for.
Juarez once again does his bit and he and Sol finally resolve their situation but almost at the loss of Diggs who Juarez is powerless to rescue this time.
Well done Jen, great read, thank you. When can we expect part 4 and 5?
