Editorial Reviews

In Southern Family, a Christmas party at a Southern grandmotherís home turns into an unexpected and tense coming-out story in this heart-warming documentary that spans several generations. In OverStuff, a gay couple's regular visit to the thrift store is interrupted by the discovery of something a little too close to home.

Southern Family
The videographer needs more training. The angle and focus for many scenes means you get close-up views of teeth. While the idea behind the video was OK, the execution values were not good enough.

Overstuff
I'm not sure there was a reason for this video. Issues were raised, nothing was resolved. No plot, no resolution = no story.

Southern Family is a moving account of how people can deal lovingly with someone's coming out, while continuing to have Christian doubts about the morality of homosexual acts. The grandmother's response, in particular--tearful but consistently loving--struck me as particularly admirable, especially because it seemed to set the tone for the whole family's response. (I wouldn't have paired it with the other piece, which seemed much less interesting.)

Southern Family is an interesting look at the younger generation (grandson) coming out to the older generation (grandmother), and how the nuclear family reacted and accepted. Especially in the southern U.S., the perception is that gay lifestyles are often shunned and even persecuted. This short film helps dispel the angst that often comes with coming out in an area of the country that appears particularly unaccepting. Overstuff is a short about partners shopping in a second-hand store, the conflicts that arise, and the resolution of those conflicts. It is real life.

The entire thing was very poorly done. Wasn't the least bit interesting or informative. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone & would never watch it again.

I liked the attempted openness and honesty and how "real" Keith made "Southern Family" seem. There is so much to identify with and it makes you think about the quality of your relationships.

The other section, "Overstuff" would not play!!!
That disappointed me.

Southern Family is a good intergenerational study in tolerance and unconditional love. The short documentary feature focuses on the journey of the octogenarian matriarch of a very larger Southern family in coming to terms with the sexuality of her gay grandson and the effect that her processes have on the rest of her family. OverStuff is a cute short commenting on the small nuances the "stuff" on in our lives has on our perceptions of the givings and takings of same. Be aware that these are two shorts combined and presented for sale on one DVD. Though good I don't believe there is fair and true value in the cost. A few more shorts added to the compilation would have made the purchase cost more fair and satisfying but singularly the DVD is well worth the rental cost.
