I primarily read during my hour long commute to and from work and as much as I love getting home, there were a couple of times when I wished the train ride was longer. It has Southern charm, Southern humor, Southern manners, and a fierce Southern mama. The plot is captivating, funny, and chock full of twists. It keeps you guessing right to the last page. I can’t wait to see what she does in the next book.
What I liked about this book, was although the reader became wrapped up in the mystery of Owen's murder, Kenni was able to keep her life separate from the job. When a second murder occurs, I am shocked that she was going to go to an Euchre game the same night as she discovered the body of a friend. But in reality, that was probably the best thing that Kenni could have planned to do under the circumstances. I was also surprised at how much politicking was being done...2 years before the election! Kenni was able to compartmentalize and keep investigations going as well as the mundane everyday parts of her job. Especially amazing since she only has one deputy!
The book was a good mystery-hints, obscure but there, were given. Typical of small towns, the gossip spread faster than one would think, and often forced Kenni to race to the victim's family to beat the gossip! With all the twists and turns in the book, it is fun to read and have the unexpected revealed.
Can I just say how much I love these characters? Poppa is such fun character and I love how he helps Kenni on the cases, just like she did as a little girl when he was Sheriff. Poppa has a different approach to things than Kenni and it proves to be very helpful during the investigation. And did I mention he’s a ghost? I still feel like Kenni has some growing to do, especially when it comes to her own personal life. I’m hoping this big time city boy is just what this small town girl needs. The romance seems to be heating up between Deputy Finn and Kenni and I can’t wait to read the next book to see if they finally get some alone time.
Tonya Kappes sure does know how to keep you on your toes. With one mystery intertwined into another, she keeps you guessing while twisting and turning until you’re dizzy. She also knows how to create a colorful cast that will have your sides hurting from laughter. These southern characters are sure to keep you in stitches.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of cozy mysteries. I’d also recommend it to anyone who loves southern humor and likes a little paranormal in their books.
