This tour was conducted & recorded during 1987, 10 years after the fatefull plane crash of October, 1977. It was recorded live in several different cities. You can here Johnny addressing the various audiences from the various cities. The Master of Ceremonies is Lacy Van Zant (Ronnie,Donnie, & Johnny's Daddy). I wore out 2 casette tapes of this when it was originally released in 1988.
So, now I have the CD version.
The line-up:
Johnny Van Zant - lead vocals
Gary Rossington - guitar
Ed King - guitar/vocals
Leon Wilkeson - bass
Billy Powell - keyboards
Artimus Plye - drums
Dale Kranz Rossington -back-up vocals
Carol Bristow - back up vocals
Allen Collins -Arrangement Consultant
Ronnie Eades - Muscle Shoals Horn Section
Harvey Thompson -Muscle Shoals Horn Section
Lacy Van Zant - Master of Ceremonies
Special Appearances by:
Charlie Daniels - Fiddle, vocals
Steve Morse - guitar
Toy Caldwell (of the Marshall Tucker Band) -guitar
Jeff Carlisi - guitar
Donnie Van Zant - vocals
The song set:
1.Introduction by Lacy Van Zant/Workin for MCA
2.That Smell
3.I Know a Little
4.Comin' Home
5.You Got That Right
6.What's Your Name
7.Gimme Back My Bullets
8.Swamp Music
9.Call Me the Breeze
10.Dixie/Sweet Home Alabama
11.Freebird (Johnny refused to sing this song, he said only one man could sing this song on stage, and that was his brother the late/great Ronnie Van Zant. Johnny hung Ronnie's hat on the Microphone, and walked off. So, what you get is an excellent Instrumental Tribute to the band members who were killed in the crash. At the begining Johnny says this one goes out to Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, & Dean Kilpatrick.)
There is a dvd version of this included in the "Freebird the Movie"/Lynyrd Skynrd Tribute Tour" DVD. This tribute tour & band eventually became the continuance of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they are still recording and touring today. This one's for the "true fan". Thanks!!!

they toured the country in tribute and put out what is arguably the BEST live album they ever produced
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 6, 2015
Soon after the plane crash that claimed the life of several members of the band, when they weren't even sure of the band's ability to remain together as an entity, Lynyrd Skynyrd went out on a memorial tour to honor their missing bandmates. With the likes of Charlie Daniels and others, they toured the country in tribute and put out what is arguably the BEST live album they ever produced. If you don't like this albums version of "They Call Me the Breeze", then you just don't like true Rock & Roll !!

I remember when the plane clashed and the Free Bird tribute brought tears.

I LOVE the original band, obsessively. I was very reluctant to give the reboot band a shot but eventually did, circa Last Rebel. I'm not crazy about the guns and God stuff personally (I like guns, and God, but not on rock records). But the band has been pretty faithful and pretty tight and I can enjoy this now, even if it can't touch OMFTR or the official boots by a country mile. 1991 is quite good also.

I have this record since the day it was originally released. (on vinyl)
I decided that I wanted it on cd as well. I remember that when I first
heard it in the 80's, I thought the drums were high in the mix especially
the snare. At the same time Gary's guitar was a little low. I still think so.
Other than that it is a very good live album and don't forget that there
are 5 original members playin' in the band, one of whom is Ed King who
plays a big part in recreating the original Skynyrd sound. Another thing is
that in that first reunion tour they used the old Peavy Maces amplifiers
and that is another thing which contributes to the sound.

This CD is pretty good. The Lynyrd Sknyrd Band does their best to deliver the goods. Guitarist Ed King sounds incredible and the songs featuring guests like Steve Morse and Toy Caldwell are stellar. Freebird is truly moving with the audience singing for the late Ronnie Van Zant and Ed King does an incredible job peforming Allen's solo on it.
However, if there is only one thing that keeps this CD from getting 5 stars is Johnny Van Zant's lack of his big brother's vocal muscle.

The long needed tour and album does not disappoint. The band plays with fire and the crowd odds electric, and in the case of the show closing 'Freebird', the audience is the only ones singing and you can clearly heart every word in haunting detail. If you only ever buy one live album, make it this one.

i have seen the band and day still work despite the death of a key member. their energy and enthusiasm is reflected in this album. if you like the band and more importantly the music, listen before you buy and make up your own mind.

Southern rock legends by grace of god! Live 1987.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on February 22, 2018
A cracking live album recorded in 1987 on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Reunion tour with special guests.
The classic songs are all here!
A great finale with the audience singing the whole of the anthem FREEBIRD, while the band just did the musical accompaniment.
A fabulous tribute to the band members who sadly lost their lives in a tragic plane crash.
Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines will never be forgotten as the early members of such a legendary rock band!

EXCELLENT TRIBUTE FROM SKYNYRD SURIVIORS AND GUESTS
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 12, 2014
This album is a wonderful relighting of the touch paper after the demise of the original band.
Pulling together survivors of the original band and guests, it is a fitting tribute to those that died in the plane crash. The atmosphere is great, the musicianship terrific and the songs bound along with the help of the crowd's enthusiasm.
A very good live album which I am pleased to own.

Fitting Tribute
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on December 18, 2012
I loved the selection of tracks on this album. The guys have done a great job. Thankfully It isn't trying to be 'One more from the road' Mk2. The only problem I have, is that this line up doesn't seem to have the solid drive of the original band. Still worth the money though.
