This book turns the expected on its ear! We see Annabel's struggles with single motherhood, post partum depression, and finding herself again honest and unvarnished.
We see her and Beau's 17 year friendship bloom into the romance it was destined for.
We also see Beau struggling with his newly admitted feelings for Annabel, and the insta love for the precious Miss Maisie, because of his desire to pull away from it because of his deep seated fear of his CTE eventually making her and everyone close to him miserable and afraid of him.
There are so many feels in this book. There is a realness you don't often see in romance. But it's perfect. That realness. The feels. Because they're balanced out by the humor. The sweetness. The love. The family. The heat...oh my, is there heat!
In the end, they heal each other. Even if it does take Beau a bit longer to figure it out.
As always, Jessica works that magic that has you squirming in your seat from the heat, swooning from the romance, and drooling for some good food and drink!!
Oh, and we get a bonus romance too!
This series is off with to a heart filling start!!

Bel and Beau... holy hotness, sweetness and amazing friendship... and hitting on such tough issues like PPD & CTE. Such a great job incorporating such untouched subjects into your book!! Can’t wait for the next installment
Annabel and Beau met in college and immediately forged a decades long connection. Best friends who never crossed that line, but the longing was always there on the back burner. Now Beau is retired from pro football and building a resort on his family’s farm, and Annabel is a struggling single working mother. These are only the surface things, though, please read this book to discover all the internal struggles this couple share. Deeply emotional, heartfelt, hopeful and extremely personal, this is Jessica’s best book yet. If you are a sucker for a friends to lovers romance, this is the book for you!
We are introduced to the Beauregard family by meeting the eldest son, Beau. He meets Annabel in college and has an instant bond with her. Though they both had feelings for each other, they both kept them hidden.
We move through their lives via emails that they sent to each other and learn about how they became the adults that they are now.
Annabel is a divorced single mother who is battling postpartum depression. A taboo subject that no one talks about. As she struggles through her depression her best friend Beau tells her to come and “re-charge” at his family's resort in the highlands of the Carolinas.
We find out that Beau is also battling something and doesn’t think he could ever have a life with Annabel now that they are both single. They share their love for each other, but Beau only wants temporary because he thinks that’s all he can have.
Jessica Peterson, I think, wrote about the pain, trauma, and embarrassment that most people feel when battling PPD and what Beau is battling very well. We feel the frustration they have as well as cheer their accomplishments when they have them.
I think this is a great start to a new great series that she has planned.
It has great characters, and support characters, as well as a great thought out plot with a happy ever after, that will warm you all the way down to your toes. .
Even though Annabelle Rhodes, has been diagnosed with postpartum depression after having a baby as a single mom her best friend, John Riley Beauregard, (Beau) invites her and her daughter, Maisie, and her mother up to his families mountain resort to relax and allow him to help his best friend.
When she discovers, that he had been diagnosed with CTE, a chronic brain disorder, caused from playing pro football, she has a desire to help him realize his life isn't over.
They met in college and never crossed that line, even though they have been attracted to each other since they met.
They've shared everything together.
Both of their families can see they belong together, but Beau doesn't want to put Annabelle through the same thing he saw his mom and family go through when his daddy was diagnosed with the same thing.
I'm so looking forward to the rest of this series. ❤
