Extremely impressive debut; gritty, G-Funk style

This album is amazing for a debut and also is impressive considering the fact that Andre and Big Boi were practically teenagers when they made it. It's a lot grittier than the Outkast albums to follow it; the lyrics are basically the duo talking about how they grew up, what street life is like, and what they learned. Even though that's the main topic matter, Outkast makes a point of showing their intellect and they explain how certain aspects of thug mentality are negative. They try to incorporate a backbone of rising above the hood and looking for a brighter future.

The beats are very funky with that G-Funk lean that reminds me of Dr. Dre or Snoop fused with a jazzy Funkadelic type sound almost. There's also some guitar and other instrumentation that you wouldn't expect to find on a rap album.

The interludes are what they are, I can take or leave them. There are a couple songs that don't hold up as strong as they could ("Call of Da Wild", "Claimin True", "Funky Ride"), but all in all Andre and Big Boi are in top form here. They lay down their rhymes with passion and it almost sounds effortless when they're on the mic. The members of Organized Noise (the crew that they founded that includes Goodie Mob), do a decent job when they guest on their spots but they never out-do Outkast themselves.

I've never heard the guys speak out so much on social issues and they do it in a way that makes you think; they're introducing themselves to the world basically saying that they came up from a hard place but don't judge them because they are intelligent and have lots to offer the world.

I wanna give this 5 stars but I cant because of the interludes and the couple songs that don't come together completely. This group would go on to outdo this album but I definitely don't think it should be overlooked.

For newer fans of Outkast, you may not remember or even like the old days when 2pac was popular and Wu-Tang had just dropped their first album, but if you give this album a chance I definitely think you'll find some songs here you'll appreciate (might even end up loving the whole thing).

For old Outkast fans, you definitely hafta pick this up if you own "ATliens" or "Aquemini". Don't even think, just buy it.

The Album That Demanded Respect For The ATL (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5.0 stars)

You know, when I listen to a lot of rap albums before this dropped, not too many artists gave ATL a shoutout. It was like we were just some other city to them. When Outkast dropped "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" back in 1994, they really put Atlanta on the map. Back then we didn't have too many acts from here. Only Arrested Development and A Van Full Of Pakastans. When they came out with "Players Ball" back in 1993, I can't tell you how much noise that made here. Me, being a little kid back then, I still remember when the radio stations played that song.

"Players Ball" isn't the only hot song on here. There are many of them. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" is another hot track that the duo was about. Then there is "Crumblin' Erb" the smokin' song, layin' back and just chillin. The bouncy track "Ain't No Thang" was another standout song on this album. And "Hootie Hoo" is just plain sick in my opinion. Then we have the positive track "Git Up & Git Out" a song about doing something with your life. And I can't count how many people was using "Funky Ride" as their bump & grind song. The production by Organized Noize is straight southern and some of the best I've heard.

This is one of those albums that I can play when I'm crusing the streets late at night. This is the album that had rap and hip hop listener know that Atlanta was not just another city. This also introduced a lot of people to Goodie Mob who dropped "Soul Food" a year later. Fact is: This is the best album to come out of Atlanta. Outkast has never topped this album (some say "Aquemini" came close). People down here may be listening to a lot of crunk and snap music, but when I play this album, they never forget this classic. This is what Southern Hip Hop is supposed to sound like. Word up.

Oh yeah, they need to hit The Source for that other half mic.

Vinyl edition missing songs. Wtf?!

As the title says, it's missing at least 2 stand out tracks, myintrotoletyouknow and deep...why?

Unfortunately I didn't look closely before purchasing or I would've passed. Otherwise it's an OK pressing, and decent sounding. It's a bit warped, like everything seems to be these days, but it doesn't effect playback.

Outkast, pronounced out-kast... Their first album set the stage for their rise beyond hip hop. In essence it is an mid 90's hip hop album, with two major difference from their mid 90's contemporaries. The most obvious was that they are from Atlanta. A bit more funky than the rest of hip hop at the time. Not to mention the raw feel of their music. The sublte difference is the production value. The sound itself of the album is outstanding, but still dated to the 90's. That said, the early to mid 90's was an amazing time in hip hop as a whole, but Outkast was actually a sonic self imposed outkast. Their sound was just a bit different. You could hear the experiementation in the album. Player's Ball is the best case in point. Track 7 is the studio funky track while track 17 is entirely acoustic and just as good. Acoustic hip hop? What?! It stands the test of time very well. The world knows how amazing they are now, but back then, well, they were just as amazing. Dirty South and deliciously funky.
