This wouldn't have been a problem had there been replacement parts available. Amazon does not sell Southland replacement parts. One must contact Southland directly, but when I did, I was told that they were out of stock. Southland had no idea when they might be back in stock. I have checked back several times without success. eReplacementParts.com and Fix.com both sell the parts, but they are backordered with no ETA.
Fortunately, the replacement blades for the Earthquake EA8F auger fit the Southland model. However, the Earthquake 8958HD replacement fishtail point has a different threading and will NOT fit the Southland.
This is unacceptable. I suppose I could purchase a new auger bit. It's just $60 or so, and the fishtail point (were it available) is $40, but it seems silly to purchase an entire auger bit if you only need the point.
Come on, Southland and Amazon! Get some replacement parts in stock!
Works great when knew
Easily operates with just one person, this auger is not heavy
Experience the no starting issue a lot of others had
a big under powered but can still get the job done
pull string housing broke after using it three times.
Package was securely shipped and securely boxed.
Set up was extremely easy simply add 50:1 gas, prime, and you're on your way.(they even included a bottle of oil for premix! I had some on hand but still really helpful for those that don't)
People have complained about gas leaking I had no experience with this. I even tipped the unit upside down and left it for 15 minutes it didn't leak at all. Just make sure that when you thread the gas cap on that it centered and straight. my bet is we have other people are in a hurry and didn't put it on straight.
I also purchased the 18 inch extension from Eskimo which fits beautifully (see picture)
I would also suggest that you keep the original packaging and box as it is a great way to store it when not in use. Storing the auger in the box also lets the gas cap be upright (vertical) so it won't have any issues in long term storage (see picture)
Best money spend in awhile. Went through rocks and hard packed clay like a breeze. I did have to hand dig any stones over 3 inches, but beats the hell out of hand digging 4 feet down.
100% reccomend this.
Rent vs buy and this is a sure bet on a buy every time.
I drove 50 8" diameter holes through sand, clay, earth with rocks, and many thick and thin roots. After that experience I would not use a manual auger with a larger CC unless it had a torque arm (some long metal or wood to absorb the shock if it hits an obstruction)
CAUTION - DO NOT USE ETHER (starting fluid). The ether dissolves the glue of the air filter and the paper element falls away. The round air filter is NOT available from Southland for this model - you must order a whole cover and filter assembly for another auger model that is compatible with this unit. I got some filter foam and cut it with scissors to replace the dissolved air filter. RTFM - I used ether because it did not start quickly. Finally I read the manual and pushed the priming bulb before starting. That worked.
This auger performs extremely well IF you respect its limitations.
1. it is a one-person manual tool. If it gets stuck, it can torque and hammer on your leg mercilessly.
2. When it got stuck, I rocked it back-and-forth until the root broke. If I could not break the root, I disconnected the power head and unscrewed the auger with a wrench. Unless you have clean , sandy soil, get a long 3/8 bolt or rod to help unscrew the stuck auger.
3. This auger can cut through roots up to 3/4 inch. The two halves of the cut root remain in the way, and the auger can suck itself down and get stuck.
4. Same if you cut through many smaller 1/4 inch diameter roots - if it stops augering, then clear the hole and cut the roots with a shear or reciprocating saw.
