Captures the feeling of falling in love

Chill, indie movie vibe.
Reminds me of 'Nobody walks in LA'
Spends the day with 2 people as they explore the Southside of Chicago.
Art museum with an nod to Ernie Banks. Lunch in the park. And it keeps going.

Is it a date? Is it not?
He's a summer intern. She's his boss.
He wants it to be. So does she but, it's complicated when you're a woman with goals.
So he takes it slow and shows her his world while, he respectfully gets to know hers.

Just for one day.
That's all this story is, just one day.
The date that was the beginning of a forever love.

Obama Drama.

Found myself missing President Obama and so watched two films about him within two days. I went to college in NYC so I liked seeing the city street life in the film "Barry" which was set near Columbia University. This film is set in Chicago and is a bit more romantic, but also thoughtful. Apart from his bad habit of smoking too many cigarettes both films are very reverent in their retelling of his biography. If you do watch the two it makes sense to watch "Barry" first then "Southside with You." The casts of both films did excellent work. If you don't like the man, of course, you will not like the films. I found them both touching tributes to President Barack Obama, a man I admire greatly.

Sweet, wholesome, (but pretty boring) love story.

I had much higher hopes for this film. It is basically just a film about Michelle, and Barrack's first date. It is sweet, and wholesome, but a bit boring. The actors did a fine job of portraying the Obama's - however they are constantly basically just making speeches about their life experiences. There is a scene at a community meeting which is the best scene of the film, and I wish a few more of these. In fairness it is particularly difficult, (I suppose) to make a film about the sitting President, and First Lady.

I adore the real life people about whom this film was made. What I liked - it really seemed to capture a moment in time when this couple fell in love. The acting was good - I would say that the actor playing President Obama did a better job than the actor portraying Michelle. What I didn't like - it was too short with too many speeches. I get that it would be creepy to portray too much of their romance, but it easily could have covered the love story from dating to marriage in a wholesome sweet non-boring way.

It just may be that it is too soon to make a film about this remarkable couple. Maybe after they have left the White House somebody will take a chance at a more complete/compelling telling of this story - including parents, friends, and the wedding. I don't regret renting it - it is a sweet story, and kudos to John Legend for producing it.

Such an inspiring story

This movie really makes you realize what one/two people can do to change the world if they love each other and care enough to try and make a difference, one person, one accomplishment at a time. From small things to big - everything matters - to someone! The small things matter, everything/everyone matters.

Great movie

I love this movie. Before seeing the movie I read about the first date of these two marvelous people so I was aware of some of the things that occurred on their date. Except for the lighting of the restaurant scene, this movie did not disappoint. That scene included an important conversation and I was unable to see Barack's facial expression. It was nice to see a movie in which the two main character use conversation to get to know each other. It was novel to see two black people demonstrate respect, appreciation, candor and intelligence as they approached a possible relationship with each other. It is rare to see that in a movie about black relationships these days.

By the way, I know Barak Obama is bi-racial but he has been very clear that he does not run away from being black. In an interview with TaNehisi Coates, Barack Obama said, “it [being black] was not something to run away from, but something to embrace.”

Too short and no substance
Verified purchase
This film was too short and lacked any substance. The ending completely caught me by surprise because I felt like the film was still developing and wasn't ready to end.

This film basically tried to characterize the first lady and forty forth president based on their first "date" through which I assume was when he proposed to her. The film tries to help you understand who they are during this time by their interactions with one another through a series of dates, which the first lady refuses to acknowledge as a date, and also reminding viewers of the forty forth president's smoking habits during that point in his life. Throughout the film, the first lady drags her feet and resist as much as possible to identify the time spent with one another as a date due to their professional relationship with one another at a corporate law firm they work at in Chicago.

What you won't see is the forty forth president propose to the first lady or anything after that. The film's ending is abrupt and left me feeling disappointed and wanting more. No matter how you feel about the Obamas, I imagine most people watching this film might find it dull, boring, and lacking any substance. I didn't feel like I knew any more about the Obamas after watching this film than before. As much as I wanted to like this film, I felt like it was poorly put together and would not have bothered buying it had I known how it was. If you are still interested in watching it, I would suggest renting or boring a copy before buying it.
