Editorial Reviews

While Southsiders is a celebration of the group's fortitude, it is also a deeply introspective, and sometimes conflicted, work. "It's a natural progression from the last record, The Family Sign, which was about growing my family," says Slug, now a father to three, who finds himself contemplating mortality. "I'm starting to think, 'What is post family man? What am I supposed to rap about now?' I'm sticking to my roots, rapping about what I'm doing, what I think about. This record is much like the other ones a very detailed look at my life."

I've been in musical love with these guys for a while now, so this was much anticipated and well worth the wait. If I had to pick a favorite track, it would be "Flicker". But really, all the tracks are amazing.

Slug always impresses me, I mean the guy is an institution when it comes to lyrics... But over the years Ant has quietly cemented his name as one of the best producers in the game, and the beats on Southsiders continue his legacy as he gets better and better. The production value is crisp and clear and the beats are all on point.. Thanks for another great adventure guys

This album sounded hokey at first. I really thought that Atmosphere fell off. Until, I buckled and bought it. IT grows on you. Very good production. Flicker is sentimental. Rap often lacks any sentimentality.

starts really slow, refelcting their age, but once you settle in to the rythm and theme of the songs, you'll love it like every other album they have put out. still one of my favorite groups of all time.

I haven't heard much from Atmosphere in years. I'm so glad I looked them up again. Every track on this album is a pleasure to listen to. I gotta say some are a little too "pop" and some sound too similar to others but they are so enjoyable nonetheless.

The best song by far is "Hell"... but its not on this CD, its on the Deluxe edition. This standard edition with 15 tracks is just ok. The Deluxe edition has "Bonus" tracks that are better than any songs on the regular CD. Its a shame really, the song "Hell" has one of the best beats ever. Such an awesome song. Actually the 5 bonus songs should have been the CD because they are the best songs by far.

"Hell" reminds me of the rap group Little Brother's: The Listening. 9th Wonder produced the beats on that CD and uses a similar beat vibe. Brings back good memories, I loved that CD.

Southsiders is a good album, but not the best that I have heard from Atmosphere. Slug seems to be stuck on one rhyme pattern on every song. He is a good emcee and can paint a nice picture, but sometimes he can be boring as well. Good beats and the album flows well. Not one for me to put on repeat.

First off, I was pretty disappointed by Family Sign, to me it didn't seem like the gritty Atmosphere I was used to.
As for Southsiders, it's MUCH better than Family Sign. The first 3 tracks really start it off on the right foot (I got to see "Camera Thief" performed live before the album dropped, which is an amazing production by Anthony Davis). Really the only tracks that I did not like were Mrs. Interpret and Star Shaped Heart. Probably just personal preference...

Bottom Line: Another great showing from Atmosphere!
