This concise history is the first book in a new series on the Soviet space program and features many rare photographs, diagrams, and charts. When Soviet rocket experts examined the first Nazi V-2s in early 1945, they immediately realized that their own technology was years behind what the Germans had developed. The dropping of the two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 made the path forward clear: the development of a Soviet atomic bomb, and a suitable missile to carry it. This story begins with the Soviet’s pre- and early war developments in rocket technology, then covers the discovery and study of the V-2s at Peenemünde, Germany. The Soviets assembled remaining V-2 rockets from existing parts and their mode of operation was studied. Developments in the Soviet R and G series missiles in the early 1950s are discussed in detail, as is the development for the peaceful use of Soviet rocket technology in space.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024This book was a positive surprise. The cool outlook, good graphic design and large number of pictures screamed "amateur historian" at first, but then I read the book, and it was great. Unlike many amateur books, this does not get lost in the swamp of details, even if there are plenty of them too. Instead it offers a good and well structured introduction to the beginnings of soviet rocket engineering. It also offers good and fresh insight into the background processes and world events that impacted the engineering work.
I would have wished more information on pre-war experiments around the Tsiolkovsky group, which I know existed, but which were barely mentioned.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2018I was instantly on my guard because there is no bibliography and no consistent indications where the reported facts are coming from (annotations, etc.). One two-page spread, ostensibly about the Soviet experience during the early part of the 1941 German invasion, actually summarizes (and shows images from) a dramatized motion picture made about it! Also, some sidebars appear to have nothing to do with the Soviet space program, and the entire thing is very choppy.
There is room in the literature for a more "popular" approach than the dense (but excellent) Challenge to Apollo, but this one is not it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2019Interesting , but nothing to write home to Baikonur about...
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018If you are looking for source information about Soviet rocket work during this era there is a lot here. But it's mostly reported uncritically, along with some material that feels like padding. The writing is poor, and a harsh editor would have helped a lot.
Don't buy this book expecting a well-narrated story.
I was provided a copy for review by the publisher.

Robert P. ShawReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 20214.0 out of 5 stars Part of a good, but slightly flawed, series by several authors
There are three books in this series available from the publisher (so far as I know) which describe the USSR's space program up to the N-1 era. There are also volumes covering the USA, but I've not seen these.
All are decent and workmanlike. There are many parts of this volume which appear to be a rehash of Boris Chertok's 'Rockets and People' but the new, lighter treatment is far more readable than Chertok's micro-details and therefore stands as a good introduction to the source material.
Some of the translations are, I think, a little clumsy and have resulted in some stilted and opaque passages. Similarly, I'm not utterly convinced regarding a few of the diagrams, possibly also due to translation issues.
Overall, I'd give all of them 5 stars if they were issued as a slightly re-edited second editions - not least because they are relatively small (6"x9")and don't crowd my poor bookshelves any further. However, in view of the editing issues this edition ( and I refer to all three) will get **** instead!
