Chocolate and Coffiest - ✔✔ Pretty good! Would (and will) drink again, seems like a good breakfast option.
Original - ✔❌ Ok. Definitely just like drinking a bottle of straight soy milk, but not bad. Would drink again, if I had other stuff to add to it. I've read in other reviews that it goes well with peanut butter or fruit, so I may try that if I order more.
Nectar - ❌❌ Ever drink the milk left over after you eat a bowl of Froot Loops? Yeah. That's what "nectar" tastes like at Soylent. No please, never again.
The biggest surprise was how filling these shakes were! Definitely seems like a viable breakfast replacement, which is hard to find for my household as both of us have differing nutritional needs for medical reasons.
I'd have given this product 4 stars, if not for the price. This trial pack contained only 4 bottles, and cost almost as much as a 12-pack in any one flavor.
That being said, it was nice to experience each flavor. The bottles themselves are made of a similar, if not the same material as milk cartons but thicker and they can be recycled or reused. As for the flavors:
Original: Tastes like cheerios, sweet oatmeal or pancake batter. Definitely not a fantastic or terrible taste but easy to swallow. You can add some Mio or other flavoring and that will improve the taste to some extent.
Cacoa: Similar to chocolate milk, but not so sweet or thick. The chocolate flavor is noticable, but not overwhelming. And it's not drown out by any of the additives. Very tasty.
Coffiest: I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have to say it tastes exactly like the beans smell. But I'm disappointed to say that the taste did not live up to the smell lol. It was bitter and kind of hard to finish for someone who has never drunken coffee before, but I would imagine you could add cream and sugar like you do to normal coffee.
Nectar: Very florally, with a taste of honey and wood. The general taste of the soylent part is kind of off-putting. Definitely my least favorite, I wasn't quite able to finish it off. I was hoping it would be a little more fruity.
Overall the experience was pretty good. Each bottle has a distinct soy taste as well as the indicated flavor. You should shake each bottle like you would with orange juice or lemonade, as there is sort of a chalky texture that settles at the bottom. Drinking soylent DOES make you feel full, but not "full" full as food would. More like satisfied. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who is curious about Soylent but isn't ready to commit or just wants to see what it's like.
#1 Chocolate: Actually pretty good. Tastes like chocolate ensure.
#2 Original: Not bad. Has a mild flavor, like wheaties cereal in soy milk. Has a slightly grainy texture, like drinking rice milk.
#3 Coffee: Not that good. I am a big coffee drinker, but this smoothie was disappointing. At best, like bitter baker's chocolate, or at worst melted rubber + stale coffee grounds.
#4 Chai: Horrible. Had to throw away. Tastes like Robitussin cough syrup trying to be camouflaged by Red Hots candies. Very artificial taste.
Now I had a friend taste them, and here is his reaction:
#1 Coffee: Pretty good, just tastes like McCafe coffee.
#2 Chocolate: Pretty good, like chocolate Ovaltine.
#3 Original: Not good. Tastes like wheat germ.
#4 Chai: Not good. Tastes like Clove candies.
I don't like coffee, but if you do, I have heard great things about their Coffiest flavor. I'm not personally a fan of the Nectar, and the original is OK; I wouldn't choose to drink it but if it's the only soylent around, I'll take it.
These are kind of expensive (over $3 per bottle) but that's cheaper than going out to eat - which is why I purchase these in the first place. Keep them at work, drink them instead of going out to eat, save money in the long run and stay mostly healthy while you do it!
Soylent is entirely plant-based, but does contain some added sugars (not much IMO) and they use GMO products as well. If you are concerned about either of those, then I encourage you to try some alternative. These don't bother me, though, so more for me ^_^
