Clearly our future NRA leader had a period of liberalized "mankind/corporations are bad" apocalyptic theme films and this movie represents that narrative.

Soylent Green, Omega Man, Planet of the Apes, perhaps even Towering Inferno all contributed to this era of a self loathing dystopian future that has never come to pass.

Except for the homelessness and the Kerkonian suicide side story. none of societal collapse and population explosion has yet to manifest itself.

Based in 2022 much has to fall apart and disintegrate in the next 3 yrs to get to where this film represents.

(Yes, Hillary may run and get elected in 2020 and push us into a Clinton apocalypse but I would bet you my ration of soylent orange that won't happen.)

It's good to see that Heston ultimately shed his unhappy self hating persona and was brought into the light of conservative redemption to go on to lead the NRA and America to greatness.

I have seen much criticism of this film due to the fact that this was loosely based on the classic overpopulation novel, "Make Room! Make Room!", but was not absolutely faithful to the literature and took the plot in a different direction. Still, I believe that in its own right, this is a worthy motion picture.

In the near future, overpopulation and poverty has broken American society down to a crawl. There are 40 million people living in New York, and only enough jobs and space for half of them. Thorne is lucky because he has a job as a police officer, food (although not what we would call food), and an actual apartment in which he legally lives, though he has to share it with his police assigned researcher, the "Book" Saul. Most of the people in his building actually sleep on the floors outside of the apartments and on the stairs.

When a high ranking corporate executive is murdered, Thorne is assigned the investigation. Immediately he is overwhelmed by the "luxury" of the dead man's apartment and by his living piece of "furniture", a beautiful young woman named Shirl (she comes with the apartment - but some pieces are personal). And very soon, people are following him, threatening him, and putting pressure on the police to DROP THIS CASE. But why? While Thorne is self-serving and an opportunist (who wouldn't be in this nightmare world?), he still has a conscience, and he feels deeply that he and Saul cannot just quit. Then he uncovers a record of operations of the dead executive's corporation that should not exist, and the pieces of an ugly puzzle start to come together. Humanity has pushed itself beyond the brink; there are too many people, too many mouths, not enough food, and the environment is shot to hell.

Aside from the riveting story of Man's self-destruction, this film is made very well, acted very well, and a treat for the eyes as both a dystopian nightmare and for the luxurious escape that some people can afford. It is something that you will want to watch more than once.

When I first saw this movie 'way back in the 70's, I never forgot it. The shock value was, of course, something to remember! Now so many years later, I decided to watch it again to see if my memory served and that "Climate change" and mismanagement of our beautiful planet was the same world presented in this old movie. It was and because it is not fiction, it is even more scary now. Granted, the movie is typical for a 70's movie....low-budget and acting style abhorrent...but still there is the message carried within. Will our planet go the same route? Has it already? Don't think we're eating people yet but who knows. Highly recommend this film.

I remember watching this at it's original opening and being moved by Edwin G Robinsons character, Sal, at his death in a euthanasia center. The world is a desolate place depleted of resources and stripped of all beauty, a grim life for the majority of people living in their cars in abject poverty. Trees exist only in museums, there is no green anywhere. Surviving on nutrition crackers supposedly made from plankton or soybeans. As he dies he is shown an IMAX like presentation of natures former beauty, a beauty his life transitioned through to his present bleak and desperate existence. And he lived through that past and the slow destruction of a paradise that the world was a very, very short time ago. Charlton Hestons Character stares aghast as he watches his friend and mentor deliberately end his life as he views scenes of nature that we, for the moment, take for granted. They are gone already in this future and Hestons character, viewing pastoral scenes of forests and oceans, says,"How could I have known? How could I have know?!" And as I quietly wept at both the performance and the meaning in this scene, two immensely fat women sat behind me and laughed out loud as Sal reveals that the new green crackers are made from recycled humans.
Before I die this world will have tripled in population. Tripled. Forget the burning forests, forget the melting ice, forget the temperature reaching record highs year after year, forget the conflicts over resources that are already like hands at the throat of our civilization, that number exceeds what the planet can replace, year by year, in degrees of magnitude and it doesn't matter if the result is not exactly as is depicted in this film, we have and we are on the way to a world no one will want to live in. And I can see a day when someone else will say, "How could I have known? How could I have known?" The world here presented by this film is authentic and if anything it's the most visionary of possible realities that are coming for this overburdened world.
I remember in"The Matrix" agent Smith talking to "Morphius" and explaining that humanity is most like a virus, moving into an area and spreading until the host body dies and then moving on to a new environment to destroy.
We are going to get a phone call someday that will go something like:"Hey earth, This is God, I want all you people of the property by the end of the month, I have some people who are interested in it. And you're not going to get your security deposit back either. Just sayin'"
This movie will give you a very good idea of what we're in for, one way or the other.

Man soll nicht vergessen, dass der Film 1972/73 gedreht wurde. Einige Jahre vorher hatten die Wissenschaftler und Politiker (die, wie immer, weniger) in "Club of Rome" auf die Bevölkerungswachstum aufmerksam gemacht und auf die Probleme, die daraus entstehen werden.
Gut, der Film zeigt die Zukunft, und zwar New York (nur als Beispiel, man erfährt, es ist überall in der Welt ähnlich). Die Stadt hat im Jahre 2022 40!!! Millionen Einwohner (wie wir wissen, hat die Stadt 8,5 Millionen Einwohner, heuer, 2019). Aber, es geht um ein Science-Fiction-Film, der das thematisiert, was durchaus möglich wäre oder wird.
Vielleicht wird es nicht so viel Menschen geben, aber unsere Ressourcen sind nicht unbegrenzt.
Meine (es gibt sonst viele) Besprechung dient um ein bisschen mehr auf unsere Erde, auf die Nachhaltigkeit und auf die Zukunft zu achten. Wir alle lieben das Leben (oder, sagen wir, meistens), wir wollen ALLE etwas haben (bei mir ist die Gier nach DVD' schon bemerkenswert, aber ich versuche anderswo zu sparen - will mich hier nicht schönschreiben), und so ein Film, der vor 46 Jahren entstand, gibt uns die Möglichkeit, in sich zu gehen. Man beginnt mit kleinen Sachen, und immer bei sich!

Was machen 40 Millionen Einwohner in New York? Am Beginn sieht man unscharf die Bilder aus einer Vergangenheit, man ahnt, das war die Stadt mit Grünflächen, Bäumen...Jetzt ist die Stadt eine einzige "Müllhalde". Die Menschen leben buchstäblich überall, schlafen auf den Stiegen, in den Kirchen (soweit sie noch existieren), draußen... Sie haben keine Arbeit, weil es NICHTS gibt, was ihnen die Früchte der Arbeit geben kann. Doch, die Arbeit haben die Müllmänner, die Polizei, die für die Ordnung sorgen muß. Die s.g. Verkäufer der "Nahrung", die plastisch aussieht, und Soylent heißt (Soy und Lent), die es in Orange, Gelb gibt. Aber, Dienstag ist der Tag, an dem die Bevölkerung Soylent Green kaufen kann. Das grüne Täfelchen scheint besser zu schmecken. Es sollte aus Plankton bestehen und ist somit sogar gesünder.
Die normale Nahrung kennen nur die wenigen älteren Menschen. Sie erinnern sich noch an Äpfeln, an Fleisch, an Erdberen (hm), sie haben noch genug Wasser gehabt, sie kannten das Geruch von Heu, Blumen...All das ist verschwunden. Die Farmen, die es irgendwo gibt, sind bewacht, keiner kann dort hinein.
Denn, es gibt sie, einige reiche Menschen, die eine große Wohnung haben, eine Dusche, einen Eisschrank, die sogar Fleisch kennen. Und in solch einer großen Wohnung wird der reiche Geschäftsmann William R. Simonson (Joseph Cotten) tot gefunden. Der Polizist, Detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) wird zu dem Tatort gerufen. Er sieht sich um. In der Wohnung findet er Leckereien, über die er nur gehört hat. Und einen Leibwächter, aber auch ein junges Mädchen, Shirl (Leigh Taylor-Young), die "zum Inventar gehört". Er erkennt sofort, dass man den reichen Mann getötet hat, und zwar im Auftrag einer oder mehreren Personen. Als er die Wohnung genauer sieht, bedient er sich, nimmt ungeniert einige Sachen mit, auch zwei Buchbänder für seinen älteren Mitbewohner, Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson). ER ist es, der ihm immer wieder über die Vergangenheit erzählt. Er war als Professor tätig, nun ist er - überflüssig - wie alle ältere Menschen, die nicht mehr arbeiten können.
Aber, Thorn mag seinen Mitbewohner...und er verliebt sich in Shirl, die nur warten und hoffen kann, dass der nächste Mieter sie übernemmen wird.
Der Mord hat höchste Priorität, obwohl man sonst die Toten in der Stadt gar nicht zählen kann. Thorns Chef, Lt. Hatcher (Brock Peters) will die Ergebnisse sehen. Aber schon am zweiten Tag bekommt Thorn eine neue Aufgabe, die Tat an den reichen Mann sollte man...vergessen.
Doch, Thorn ist ein Einzelgänger in der Stadt, wo ein Leben NICHTS zählt. Mit Hilfe von Sol erfährt er, dass Simonson einer DER Männer hinter der Fabriken, die Soylent produzieren, war. Außerdem war er ein Freund des Gouverneurs. Und als Shirl ihm erzählt, Simonson war in der letzten Zeit niedergeschlagen, er war in der Kirche, hat gebeichtet, ist er sich sicher, dass dahinter etwas Größeres steckt.
Er bemerkt auch, dass er beschattet wird. Noch komplizierter wird die Sache, als er sich in die junge Shirl verliebt. Sie ist in der Wohnung geblieben - und wartet, ob der neue Mieter sie übernehmen wird.
Auch Sol sucht nach Antworten. Er findet fast alle, bis zum letzten Beweis...
Das soll sein junger Freund machen. Er kann nicht mehr, er ist müde und sein Leben ist zu Ende.
Thorn macht sich auf dem Weg zu der Fabrik und kommt dem Geheimnis (ob er das ist???) auf dem Grund.

Was sagt uns der Film? Er hat einige Schwächen, vielleicht ist die erste das Jahr 2022. Zu früh, schon damals bei den Dreharbeiten. Dann muß der Zuschauer zwangsläufig doch die Menschen sehen, die trotz der Nahrungsknappheit einfach "zu gut" ausschauen. Es ist irgendwie komisch, dass mir solche Kleinigkeiten eine gute Story etwas schmälern.
Sonst hat der Film durchaus Potenzial. Es ist erschreckend zu sehen, wie die Stadt in sich fällt, wie die Menschen tagein/tagaus leben. Nur nach der Suche; die Nahrung, nach dem Wasser, Schlafmöglichkeiten. Keine Freundschaften entstehen da, eher die Rivalität, bzw. der Kampf. Wer hat schon Zeit für Bücher? Papier gibt es nicht mehr? Und die Musik? Die Vögel, die Bäume? Alles trist, alles dunkel, alles grau, schmutzig. Tag und Nacht fahren die Müllwagen und trotzdem versinkt die Stadt im Müll. Auch menschlich.
Ein Leben ist nichts wert, die Ehre, Ethik, Moral....was sind das für Wörter?
Das kann man im Film finden. Es gibt sie, die Liebe, aber...ohne Zukunft.

Der Film ist bei mir mit 4 P auch wegen EINES Mannes bewertet, und zwar Edward G. Robinson. Der KLEINE/GROßE Schauspieler ist hier schon sehr krank, er starb bald nach Dreharbeiten (1973, der Film wurde gerade beendet). Er ist schon sehr krank, aber er spielt WUNDERBAR. Eine seiner besten Rollen, obwohl er so viele hatte.
Auch Heston spielt ganz gut, naja, er ist gerne der Retter.
Es sind viele Rezensenten da, die den Film bewertet haben, Ray, Roxy, Tris und Rumbu (der mit 2 P, kann ich verstehen).
Trotzdem würde ich den Film empfehlen. Eben, mit Einschränkungen!

WAS IST DAS GEHEIMNIS VON SOYLENT GREEN ??? ...... so ertönt es mehrfach im Trailer zu dem Film, der ebenso wie zwei interessante kurze Specials (knappe 5 und 10 Minuten) auf der DVD enthalten ist. 97 Minuten ist das Filmwerk lang. Bild- und Tonqualität sind gut. Es wurde durchgängig synchronisiert.

Mit herrlichen nostalgisch anmutenden Bildern aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert beginnt "Soylent Green". Doch die Musik wird allmählich schneller, hektischer und lauter. Und plötzlich werden wir in das Jahr 2022 katapultiert.

"Soylent Green" wurde 1973 gedreht und befasst sich mit schaurigen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen im Jahr 2022, vorwiegend in New York. Zur Zeit der Dreharbeiten lagen die geschilderten Ereignisse somit satte 50 Jahre in der Zukunft. Zum Stand dieser Rezension (Herbst 2020) haben wir das Jahr 2022 beinahe eingeholt -- und werden es auch sehr bald überschritten haben. Somit können wir heutige Realität und damalige Fiktion vergleichen. Das heutige tatsächliche New York misst etwas über acht Millionen Einwohner. Voraussichtlich wird dieser Trend noch weiter aufwärts gehen. Die Stadt mit den meisten Einwohnern auf unserer Welt ist übrigens Tokio. Dort sollen sogar 38 Millionen Menschen leben.

Und fast ebenso viele Menschen, nämlich 40 Millionen, leben lt. "Soylent Green" im fiktiven New York des Jahres 2022. Die Verhältnisse sind verheerend: Die Stadt ist völlig überbevölkert. Das Wasser wurde durch die Industrie vergiftet, der Erdboden verseucht, die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt erheblich dezimiert. Die meisten Menschen finden keinen Platz. Sie müssen in großen Hallen oder sogar auf Treppenstufen schlafen.

Ein reicher Industrieller wird ermordet. Er war Aufsichtsrat der Produktionsfirma "Soylent Green" und wusste offensichtlich viel zu viel. Doch ein wackerer Polizist hat Blut geleckt und macht sich auf die Fährte nach den Hintergründen des nicht ganz schlüssig erscheinenden Mordes.

"Soylent Green" ist ein düsterer, zugleich aber auch wunderbarer Film. Er schockt und rüttelt auf, bewegt, berührt und macht sogar auch Hoffnung. Es ist ein -- besonders für damalige Verhältnisse -- Science Fiction- Film, darüber hinaus ein Kriminalfilm, sogar Thriller, umfasst handfeste Action, ansatzweise Horror und vor allem gegen Ende eine Verfolgungsjagd mit Schießerei, von der so mancher Western träumen mag. Vor allem aber besticht er durch seine gnadenlose Psychologie. Ein alter Mann ist verzweifelt. Er möchte sich einschläfern lassen. "Ich habe viel zu lange gelebt", wird er zu seinem Freund, dem Polizisten, sagen. "NEIN!" wird dessen entschlossene und überzeugte Antwort lauten.

CHARLTON HESTON (1923- 2008) ist genau der richtige Typ, um sich auf die Spur nach dem Geheimnis von Soylent Green zu machen. In einer verzweifelt- oberflächlichen Welt agiert er unbequem, markant und kantig. Er ist neugierig geworden und findet einen neuen Lebensinhalt. Er kämpft für seinen selbstauferlegten Auftrag -- obwohl oder vielleicht gerade weil ihm sein eigenes Leben nicht besonders lebenswert erscheint.

Edward G. Robinson (1893- 1973) ist kaum wiederzuerkennen unter seinem dichten graumelierten Rauschebart. Beinharte Filmfans kennen ihn noch als eine Art Gangster mit Herz oder etwas später als Komödiant mit gangsterhafter Vergangenheit. Das Berührende ist: In "Soylent Green" beschäftigt er sich mit seinem Tod. In Wirklichkeit sollte er zwei Wochen nach Beendigung des Filmes an Blasenkrebs sterben.

Regisseur Richard Fleischer (1916- 2006) hatte schon jahrzehntelang Western, Krimis, Horror und Science Fiction- Filme gedreht. Wohl auch deshalb hat er selbst Kleinstrollen von "Soylent Green" (in der Bibliothek, im Krematorium) noch mit Darstellern besetzt, die bereits in den 1930er Jahren Filme drehten, die beispielsweise schon mit Errol Flynn gesegelt waren. In den etwas größeren Nebenrollen besonders hervorzuheben ist natürlich Joseph Cotten als reicher Mann und Aufsichtsrat von Soylent Green. Leigh Taylor- Young, als seine Mäträsse ziemlich hübsch, sollte beispielsweise später in "Dallas" weitere Karriere machen. Die farbige Paula Kelly, recht erotisch, galt als eines der gefragtesten Fotomodelle jener Zeit. Brock Peters, der ebenso farbige Chef von Charlton Heston, hatte beispielsweise schon den Verurteilten in "Wer die Nachtigall stört" verkörpert. Chuck Connors, der muskulöse Gegenspieler von Charlton Heston, war damals ein sehr erfolgreicher Baseball- und auch Basketball- Star.

Charlton Heston selbst befand sich in jener Zeit nach frühen Western wie "Der weiße Sohn der Sioux" (1952) und Monumentalfilmen wie "Ben Hur" (1959) in einer sogar etwas länger anhaltenden Comeback- Phase als Action Star in hoffnungsarmen Welten. Ich kenne und liebe ihn in "Planet der Affen" (1968), "Die Rückkehr zum Planet der Affen" (1970) und "Der Omega- Mann" (1971).

Zurück zu "Soylent Green". Das Wichtigste zum Schluss: Der Film gilt als einer der ersten Öko- Thriller in der Filmgeschichte. Tja, was ist denn nun das Geheimnis von Soylent Green -- bzw gibt es eines?!? Jedenfalls zeigt der Film schon mal sehr klar, dass das, was in den Medien lauthals propagandiert wird, zwar durchaus den Tatsachen entsprechen kann, es aber keineswegs muss. Und, lieber Filmfreund, spätestens nach Beendigung dieses Filmes werden Sie, sofern Sie nicht gerade Abstinenzler sind, folgende (noch) "selbstverständliche Dinge" überaus zu schätzen wissen: echtes Papier, fließendes Wasser, duftende Seife, frische Erdbeermarmelade, ein großes, saftiges Steak, sogar einen Schluck echten Whisky .... bis hin zu wunderschönen Natur- Landschaften, die uns umgeben und umgeben sollten!

I had not realised that Global Warming and all the effects it would place on a society was as strongly trumpeted as in this film. Back in 1973 I cannot recall ever being confronted with the state of the future of Earth being determined by what the human race do from 1973. In fact, once I got the message, about 5 minutes in, my reaction was admiration for the Producers, Actors and the Director, along with all who worked on this film. Many may have missed this message and just played it as a welcome paying part whilst others were radically hoping that balances would be tipped and governments around the world would step back from the abyss in time to save the planet. However, it is not the norm for the population of any country to take regard of anything that will require his or her involvement and passion; the world is not made this way.
The film predicts a New York of 40million population with mass homelessness and unemployed living on the streets or under any cover that is available. It is the dystopian future nobody wants but which nobody bothers to fight against.
This is where the company Soylent comes into play manufacturing a variety of coloured protein biscuits upon which the massive population depends. Its latest product, Soylent Green, unknown to the downtrodden masses is created from the bodies of the dead; the unwritten and unrealised maxim becomes "The more who die, the more are fed". Charlton Heston's policeman, part "Thorne?" is horribly corrupted by a corrupt and cynical minority of rich and notable people including the Sate Governor. It is one of these Important people, a member of the Sylent Board by the name of Simonsen who is assassinated at the behest of Soylent because of his shock of learning of the truth about their products. Being regarded as unreliable he is marked down for termination and is to this situation that Detective Thorne enters the fray. He is convinced that Simonsen's death was targeted and he begins the process of gathering information, as well as liberating some soap, bourbon, apples and beef from Simonsen's home. He returns the following day to sample the delights of the furniture living in the flat, lucky devil.
To cut what could be an extremely long review into a short review only needs me to relate the relationship between Thorne and Sam Roth, beautifully played by Edward G Robinson, as being a central prop to the characterisation and Thorne's reaction to the event by which his "Book" has had enough of life and decides to die at a government centre where his body, and those of thousands more are changed into Soylent Green protein biscuits. This period of the film is, for me, the most beautiful as it features Sol, Edward G, in the peace of his "death room" being mesmerised by the beauty of the film of Earth's past fecundity and the very appropriate and also very emotional Beethoven's 9th symphony.
Thorne then has the proof of what Soylent and its directors are doing and he appeals to his boss to get that information out.
My apologies for this rather choppy review, it is enthusiasm and righteous desire that have propelled me. So, all I really need to say is that this film deserves 5 stars and probably more.

I hadn't seen this for years but it holds up well in most departments. It's true that the re-imagining of 2022 is executed quite poorly in so far as minimal effort has been put into presentation. Everything still looks quite 1970's.
The idea underpinning the whole film is better than its depiction. The characters are good and Heston's morally ambiguous law enforcer was a welcome change from the crusading maverick types normally shoe horned into these roles. It's a very bleak and dystopian existence; an over populated world with not anywhere near enough natural resources to maintain the majority of the poor and hopeless souls who sleep in stairwells and crowd the streets. The implication is that all social control has broken down though this wasn't wholly represented in the film where the wealthy live in fortified flats eating luxuries such as jam and vegetables whilst the rest subsist on dry 'nutritional' squares of Soylent products. There was an interesting riot scene whereby large bin trucks with scoops on the front drive through the thronging masses scooping them up en masse and the euthanasia scene is also very memorable.
It's a good watch for sci-fi fans in particular, maybe a minor classic of its type rather than a full blown one but certainly watchable and thought provoking.

This classic film was first released over 40 years ago. The acting by Charlton Heston and Edward G Robinson is superb, for what appears to be, a low-budget film. In a very touching scene, towards the end of the film, Robinson's character submits himself for voluntary euthanasia. In life imitating art, Robinson died, about two weeks after completion of the film. And yes, in case you were wondering, he knew he was going to die, as did his friend, Charlton Heston.

The transfer to Blu-ray is very reasonable, considering its age, but you do not get modern-day Blu-ray reproduction. You will not get Dolby 5.1 but the sound quaity is quite acceptable. I will not review the film itself, as many others have very ably done this.
