Now everyone's biggest concern -- the taste. Again, not new to the vegan protein shake game, and again, going to have to give them 5 stars. NO chalkiness, NOT super thick, NO offensive "green" or "powder" taste. Smooth as can be. I like the mocha one, smooth chocolate-y flavor. Not overly sweet, and my stomach appreciates that. Vanilla, again smooth as cream. I like this one compared to some of the other vanilla-flavored protein shakes I've had, mostly because it's not as thick as them, compared specifically to Vega One ready-to-drink protein shakes. They tend to get chunky/thick towards the bottom of the bottle. Have not run into that with Soylent. Lastly, chai. Yes, it does taste like chai, but VERY very mildly. A good, round flavor, but I'm a chai fanatic so I wish it came through a little more.
For the flavors, I'm surprised no one has really gotten creative. For the vanilla one, I may consider adding a few drops of vanilla stevia. And for chai, I may pick up a chai concentrate and add about a tablespoon to it just so my tastebuds are satisfied. Also -- I think a lot of the experience with soylent is how you drink it. May sound a little crazy, but if this is all you're having for a meal, you want to enjoy it as much as possible. I prefer to shake it up and put it in a glass jar with some ice. I leave them in the fridge, so putting them over ice makes them nice and cold and refreshing. I drink it with a metal straw and it makes it quite enjoyable. That way I make sure I'm not drinking it too fast, and it's pretty aesthetically pleasing.
I cannot speak on any weightloss as of yet, but I started this while I had started a colon cleanse, and between the two I can say my stomach is feeling good and I'm not as bloated throughout the day. Again, still first fews days with soylent, but I have been trying to cut my coffee intake, and I have not been suffering from any caffeine withdrawals, God Bless!!
I recommend Soylent to everyone, whether it's a daily thing or a just an occasional pick-me-up, I think it's a great item to have in your inventory.
Pros: Convenient, easy, less expensive than a coffee and healthier, fulfilling meal, vegan
Cons: Packaging waste, higher in fat and sugar than I'd prefer
Summary: It's a good option for me and I'll probably continue purchasing, though I'm interested in trying Huel because I like the nutrients better.
Chai - This one is my favorite! I really like chai tea, although this has a more subtle flavor and thicker, creamier consistency. I also like that it has less caffeine than the others. I would probably subscribe to this one.
Coffiest - This is my second favorite. It's difficult to describe the flavor, as it doesn't taste like coffee at all. The closest thing that comes to mind is Cheerios, the cereal. I'd also subscribe to this one.
Vanilla - This is my least favorite. I am indifferent to the flavor, which tastes nothing like vanilla or coffee. To me it tastes like burned Cheerios, which sounds awful, but I don't know how else to describe it. I wouldn't intentionally seek this flavor.
I don't generally submit public reviews of products, but I am interested in food, health, the environment, and sustainability, so I felt compelled to share my experience with the Soylent Cafe variety pack.
I truly love how convenient Soylent is. It's become a successful replacement for my unhealthy work break in which I'd spend $7 on coffee and a snack which has little to no nutritional value. I like that I can leave an unopened, refrigerated bottle in my work locker and then have a healthy fulfilling meal at less than half the cost I'd normally pay.
Cost Breakdown: The variety pack with the 15% Subscribe & Save discount came down to $35.70 at the time of my purchase. This is $2.98 a bottle/meal, making it super affordable. If you pay full price, it's $42 or $3.50 a meal, which is pretty good but not as great. Definitely aim for the sub&save discount.
What I don't like is that every meal results in a fair amount of waste. Yes, the bottles are recyclable but that's not truly a resolution for plastic waste. Unfortunately there's no powdered form for the Cafe collection. Additionally, even if there was a powdered form it's not stable without refrigeration, which isn't an option for me at my job. Bummer. I'd have to bring the powder and water separately, which decreases the convenience factor.
Everyone's nutritional requirements are going to be a bit different and I'm not going to pretend to be a nutritionist, but personally I'd prefer the nutrient ratio and sugar to be a bit different. Granted, I'm not looking for Soylent—especially Cafe versions—to replace the majority of my meals, but the amount of fats and sugars are quite high. In comparison to the trash fast food I'm replacing with Soylent, Soylent has about 3g less sugar, but about 10g more fat, approximately equal carbs, and fortunately 9g more protein. As you can see it's a mixed bag for me when comparing general nutrients. Another meal replacement called Huel seems more aligned with my goals.
