The science fiction series Space Above and Beyond, which enjoyed a brief run in the 1995-96 season, was created by X-Files producers Glen Morgan and James Wong as a revision of the classic war series Combat!. Set in the not-too-distant future, Space Above and Beyond follows the adventures of five inexperienced Marines of the 58th Squadron, who are involved in a war against the Chigs, a race of aliens bent on conquering the Earth. Morgan and Wong gave their main characters intriguing personalities--Nathan West (Morgan Weisser) has joined the Marines to save a girlfriend captured by the aliens, while Rodney Rowland's Cooper is an artificially created human whose service is inspired by a desire to escape the violent prejudice he faces on Earth. The action and stories are gritty and dramatic, and put a fresh spin on traditional wartime stories--highlights include "The Enemy," in which the 58th is stranded behind enemy lines; "Toy Soldiers," in which West's younger brother is serving under a dangerously reckless lieutenant; and the two-part "If They Lay Us Down to Rest " and "Tell Our Moms We Done Our Best," which brought the series to a close with the Earth on the verge of peace talks with the aliens as the military launches a perilous operation. Commentary by Morgan and Wong and the cast would have been welcome, especially if the plans for the unseen second season could've been revealed, but unfortunately, no supplemental features are included in this slickly produced, no-frills set. --Paul Gaita

20 years later I can now binge watch this. For the series was made, it certainly does have that 90's cheese that is promised in the description. The special effects, by today's standards, aren't even up to B grade gaming standards, but if you place yourself in the time that this was made, is passable. I find the stories behind the characters more interesting now than I would have when it first aired.
There are a lot of plot issues, in that pilots aren't ever sent on ground combat missions, but I guess in space everyone has to multitask and pull some extra weight.
Other than that one issue, I am enjoying this series.
Delivery and packaging were fine. No complaints.
I ordered it used, in very good condition (casing was a little worked over, but the DVDs were in good double sided condition). No bells and whistles, but with the pilot (2hr) and all the episodes included, I've even caught my non sic fi loving wife (outside of Star Wars) peeking over my should to watch. That says a lot to me.
the story is centered on a squad of marines in the future fighting a unknown alien thats destroyed our colonies. but its not just a sci-fi war pic, its got aton of history and side stories that go with the fight scenes and the characters. you end up feeling your part of the squad as they fight for the future of the human race. the graphics and special effects aint that great but then this was 95 and 96 so really pretty good for then. but the storyline was soo well thought out. the show was created by Glen Morgan and James Wong who also worked on the x-files.
if you like sci-fi or war shows this is a good one to check out!

For those who only want a review of the physical item: DVDs secured in a plastic book style case with a picture and some words on it.
If you are interested in the content: SAAB was yet another series never given a fair chance by the company concerned. Good characters and stories and groundbreaking CGI for the time. My only reservation was fighter pilots being as grunts when your fleet consists of huge ships with substantial ground forces available. Recorded to keep on VHS when it aired and am now glad I've bought it on DVD.
A sort of cross between starship troopers and battle star Galactica, we follow the wild cards as their go to war with an invading alien army or are they in search of their friends and families and putting some of their past behind them.
Even though you don't really get a finale worthy of such a good show like this it well worth a watch.
1. Well, some of the stories are awful, most are good, a few are awesome - typical episodic sci-fi TV in other words.
2. The SFX show as being very dated now, especially on a modern widescreen TV - at some points you can almost count the pixels. That said, refer to 1. above - on the OK and awesome episodes you won't notice the poor SFX.
Otherwise, it's a hoot - check out those bad 90's hairdo's!
I did have one query for the shows writers/creators though - bearing in mind just how long & expensive it is to train standard fast jet pilots, it follows that training fast jet/space pilots will be even longer & more complicated and expensive ... so why on earth hand them a rifle and then treat them as ground infantry grunts? So, it's 5 million credits each to train them but just one 5 credit bullet to stop each of them dead ...
Come on, fellas - whoever heard of an infantry squad made up of nothing but aircrew lieutenants?
The picture quality for a dvd is far better than many in my collection. There are certain scenes where you see quite a bit of noise but they are few. It tends to show up if someone is standing in front of a really bright background. I found it acceptable since this set is the only way I currently know of to see the show.
If you’re an old fan I’m sure you’ll love this set. I haven’t seen it since it was first broadcast and I’m watching it with my nephew who is 30. We are both thoroughly enjoying the whole thing!
