Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie is an alternate telling of the first arc of the TV series. In a universe swarming with inhabited planets and bizarre aliens, corrupt governments operate in the pay of star-spanning criminal syndicates and the Justice Federation of United Galaxies places a price on the heads of hardened criminals. The highest bounty of all rests with the infamous space pirate Cobra, an unstoppable rogue whose left arm conceals a devastating psycho-gun. Presumed dead for two years, Cobra comes out of retirement after an encounter with the beautiful bounty hunter Jane - a decision which leads him into direct conflict with the sinister Galaxy Pirates, a vast criminal organization led by Crystal Boy, the personification of death itself. I’ve been a Cobra fan since the Matthew Sweet video “Girlfriend”. More specifically, I fell in love with Jane Royal in that video. I actually knew nothing about the anime and in the early 90s there was no way of easily finding out. I didn’t find out its name until I saw the Space Adventure Cobra movie (vhs) at a blockbusters in late 90s. Couldn’t wait to watch it.
And was sorely disappointed. Disappointed to discover the goofy looking blond dude was the main character instead of Jane. That she dies halfway through the movie. And it just wasn’t that good a movie. It didn’t help that the dub, especially for Corbra himself, was just horrible. Now I did love the art style and the animation was really good, even by today’s standards. Plus the Matthew Sweet video was a bonus feature after the movie. After that the movie did fade from memory rather quickly.
(Spoilers for series ahead)
About ten years later after I had internet access for a few years and recently got broadband that I would rediscover Cobra. The manga and the tv series. I was able to watch the entire Royal sisters arc which made me love Jane even more, even though she still dies fairly early in the show. But I was never able to see the whole series until now.
It was a much better experience. We’re actually able to meet Cobra and get to know him rather quickly before the story really takes off. He’s still a doofus, even after he gets his memories back and a bit of a womanizer, though not as bad as Sean Connery’s Bond. And I really love Lady (his partner) who I actually forgot was in the movie. I wish she was in more episodes but she does feature prominently in quite a few (unlike Cobra The Animation series where she barely gets five minutes of screen time in 12 episodes!).
Being a fan of 80s anime, I really like the art style and animation itself is really good and holds up well today. It doesn’t really lean on heavy scifi stuff but more that Buck Rogers / Flash Gordon type adventure fun. Cobra does see himself as a ladies man and can be lewd at times, again, not as bad as Bond has ever been. And it would be fair to criticize the show for the fact that every woman in this universe is either wearing a bikini or thong leotard. But surprisingly this is treated like normal attire and never comes off as blatantly ecchi as 90 percent of anime today filled with under age teenage girls.
As a fan of Gatchaman, He-Man and She Ra, and the more recent Starblazers (Battleship Yamato), Cobra has almost everything I want in an animated show. I highly recommend it, especially for fans of sci-fi adventure. You will have a good time.
Anyways, Space Adventure Cobra has finally arrived on blu ray.
The series has been lovingly restored in 1080p. Excellent quality, no artificial sharpening or DNR. Looks stunning I may say.
The set is 3 discs with 31 eps and a few special features. Those features are ep 1-2 that were dubbed along with an interview with the shows creator
Sound is just..oh my lord. We get three sublime tracks. A remastered 5.1 DTS, 2.0 and something I rarely see on releases, the original mono track, wow!
Cobra is non stop fun featuring the titular cocky character blasting his way through space pirates accompanied by his bad a** robot Lady Armaroid. A mostly episodic series with some story arcs spread throughout the 31 episodes. It’s never boring
I can’t suggest this enough. If you want a cool and classy show, back when anime had more of an edge, Cobra is the one for you. Don’t forget the feature film to accompany it.
Now see folks; that’s how you write a review, not vague statements that don’t match the product.

The drawings are very 80s and very consistent but I did find the animation weird at times. For example, recoils and slow motions would have very unnatural timings. The music is fine but unusual at times too.
The story is fast-paced. We don't get to know the characters too well. Most of them are carrying the story along. Our main character was the exception, of course. One wonders what his main role was at all in this movie. Him winning against the bad guy was such a fluke.
All that aside I recommend this movie to anybody curious about what we watched in the 90s.
** grew up **
But really, I laughed at myself a few times. How in the world me, my brother, my sister were ever so gullible? I believed in Cobra's character back then. He was supercool. But now, Cobra's goofiness is close to being annoying to me. He wants to be like Ryo (City Hunter) but comes off as a weirdo. He acts like Lupin but his acting is not as believable as Lupin's. He smokes that cigar in even the weirdest situations, OMG...
** spoilers **
I didn't notice any misogyny. Are people mad that an entire army of female soldiers died? Or could it be that android partner who always obeys Cobra's orders?
There is no 80s-90s clichés either in this movie, OMG people... This came out in 1982, when what you guys call clichés were being invented or introduced to us...
