Natural crystals take thousands--even millions--of years to form, so it isn't often that a budding young geologist gets a chance to watch them grow. Space Age Crystals--a series of crystal-growing kits based on experiments performed by astronauts--cuts that time down to days as you grow glittering crystals in your own home. This kit contains the chemicals you need to grow "quartz," "amethyst," "fluorite," and "emerald" crystals. Follow the clear, comprehensive instructions and in about a week you'll see fully formed crystals looking very similar to their natural counterparts. A great way for parents and children to spend time and learn together. --Lisa Whipple

This version of the Space Age Crystal Growing kit has eight experiments to make crystals out of Potassium Aluminum Sulfate (alum). The crystals are beautiful and foolproof if you can follow the directions and be patient. This is marketed for ages 12 and up. My 8-year-old is doing fine with adult supervision (standard safeguards regarding boiling water, carefully pouring without splashing, not goofing around). The kit includes the following:

-Two bags "amethyst crystal" powder (indigo-colored alum).
-One bag "diamond crystal" powder (undyed alum)
-One bag gypsum
-Some popsicle sticks
-Some cheap plastic trays that look like packaging, including a "geode mold"
-A pamphlet about "Space-age crystal growing" that has some good information, but with very small text and not very appealing format or illustrations
-Two pages of instructions

The eight experiments each take a week or so to complete, and are best done in order:

1. Growing an "amethyst" (Boiling water in amethyst powder)
2. Growing a "fluorite" (Glue one of the amethyst crystals to a rock, use it as a seed crystal in concentrated leftover amethyst solution)
3. Growing an "amethyst geode" (cast a plaster "geode shell" out of gypsum, use leftover amethyst liquid and crystals to grow crystals inside the pretend geode. Apply black wax or shoe shine, not provided, to make it look like a natural geode).
4. Growing a "diamond cluster," much like Experiment 1 but "diamond" (clear alum) powder. Careful measuring required.
5. Growing a "diamond single" crystal, like Experiment 2 but with diamond power.
6. A "diamond geode," like Experiment 3 but with diamond powder.

My daughter got this kit for her birthday and opened it two days ago, we already have crystals growing! My father (a geologist) was impressed with the variety and learning tools provided in this kit. It's a great deal and fascinates my daughter!

Got this for my grandsons birthday and the crystals were not as shown. There were suppose to 3 different crystals and 2 of them were the same. He was disappointed because of this. They had the Quartz and Emerald but not the other shown on the box.

The crystals dissolved back into solution with water

I was hoping for Fortress of Solitude size crystals so I could talk to my father, Jor-el.
The box looks way better.

My child and I were completely disappointed by this product. We were unable to grow anything larger than a few sand grain sized faux quartz crystals. Meticulous attention to the poorly written directions and weeks of waiting yielded no results from any of the other samples. Please check the numerous other reviews here which note the exact same lack of results and think twice before purchasing this kit. I would definitely NOT recommend this product.

Worst gift ever! My son was so excited to make them and then bummed when we couldn't do it right away. The first step calls for you to use an old saucepan with a lid that you no longer use for food! Since l didn't have one, we had to buy one!! The description doesn't tell you this. It also doesn't mention that you have to boil the stuff down three times over several days for each color crystal. So, this is a twelve day project!!

This gift was a hit for my neice's birthday! She was so excited to get started growing her crystals. She's been texting me updates on the progress of the growth. She said the directions were clear and each day she sees a new growth on her experiment.
