Bringing my childhood favorite show to life!

For an old school Space Battleship Yamato buff (Or as it was officially called in the states "Starblazers") I was completely and pleasantly surprised how well they did in bringing this classic to life and in the confines of a 2hr and 15 minute live action movie.

For those who watched the original Space Battleship Yamato (Starblazers in the States) back in the late 70's early 80's The movies premise is primarily based on the first series "The Quest for Iscandar" in which an old Japanese Super Battleship (The Yamato is actually a real historic Japanese Battleship sunk off the coast of Japan near the end of WW II) is rebuilt from within its original destroyed hulk using technology from a distant civilization wanting to help the people of earth save their dying planet. A volunteer squad of military specialist called the "Star Force" (No "Space Force" Jokes intended) leave the earth in the newly designed Yamato to secure the technology needed to save the planet to do so but must return within a years time or it will be to late to save the Earth. Some elements are brought in from the second series "The Comet Empire" (I.E. The Space Marines, The original 2nd series ending, but not the actual Comet Empire storyline itself) . Again while the movie is mostly based on the 1st series of Starblazers some things were added and changed to accommodate the 2hr and 15min run time.

The story, direction, acting, music score (including music from the original anime series) , and yes even the CGI was well done for the budget that this movie was done on. Seeing my childhood favorite anime series as a live action movie just brought more memories how I truly enjoyed this franchise.

If you enjoyed the original anime series as much as I did I would highly recommended it.

FYI: Almost forgot to mention that the movie was originally shot and recorded in Japanese there is however both a English Subtitle and English Dub option on the Blu-Ray.

As an old fan of Space Cruiser Yamato and the later American adaptation Star Blazers, it was pretty cool to see that iconic series brought to life. Though I'm a fan of subtitles, the dubbing here isn't painfully bad, though it's pretty obvious how the story ends. Come on, it's Japanese so be ready for lots of self-sacrifice. Somehow, the Space Marines sounding like extras from The Expendables was actually hilarious. Just like the anime, characters die here and that was as it should be. The design of the Yamato was perfect and the Wave Motion Gun was everything over the top I hoped it would be. I admit, Kodai and Yuki annoyed me a bit, but the rest of the crew were awesome. All in all, a great popcorn and soda afternoon flick.

I was in 6th grade in 1979 when a friend from school told me about this animated series called Star Blazers. I totally fell in love with that story. This film adaptation is very true to the original. The timeline of the story is compressed to fit into a single feature film, and it definitely hits all the major plot points with a little twist on how they present the villains and the princess. I really enjoyed watching it. The animated models, the lighting and texturing of the CG is not Marvel-Studios quality, but it is good enough to enjoy! I know I did. And if you are reading this, probably you are similar. I was already familiar with the story, and know the whole plot, so there were no surprises for me until the very end. I recommend watching it.

I hear rumors there is scuttle about Hollywood of a US version being made. Honestly.. this story needs to be a GoT style multi-seaon HBO series, and NOT a single one-shot film. Even at 3+hrs, there's too much story telling. It needs to be a multi-part series at least. But that's a review for another day. THIS review for THIS film, I give it thumbs up. I wish in the English Translated Version they had used the old Animated character names like Derek Wildstar and Captain Avatar, but oh well... you can easily figure out who is who if you know the characters from the English dubbed original animated series.

*WARNING* This version is NOT a Hollywood Film. It does not follow the traditional Hollywood model for a heroic "Save the world" story.

Space Battleship YAMATO I rather enjoyed it. It's actually based on an old anime called Star Blazers but alas I unfortunately don't know anything about that so can't say whether it's faithful to that I'm afraid.
Brief description- world gets all but destroyed by an unseen alien nation known as the Gamilians, then 5 years later the remaining Human race is being destroyed by radiation poisoning and Earths last hope rests on one ship- YAMATO to travel to the far reaches of the solar system to find a cure for the radiation poisoning before its completely destroyed. Think along the lines of Battlestar Galatica, Starship Troopers and even Halo and you'll be on the right track.
My only gripes is in middle act it gets a little slow and the film can be abit melodramatic in places and I would of liked to see the back story explained/shown in greater detail but perhaps the original anime may of done that already.
The positives outweigh the negatives for me tho, the attention to detail is brilliant, it looks absolutely fantastic, the quite phenomenal special effects are mind blowing especially the titular ship itself. The characters I cared for, although not all got fleshed out enough for me, but there's some real bad ass heroes, a feisty female fighter pilot and a cool gun totting robot.
Overall not classic, it wouldn't top any of my polls but it's still an enjoyable film with incredible special effects . Recommended by me. 7/10

I enjoyed the original Anime, and I wanted to like this movie but to be honest, it I found it to be boring. There were some good action sequences, and the CGI is respectable but this film is about an hour too long. It's like somebody took a 5 hour mini-series and tried to compress it down to a 2 1/2 hour movie. There was a whole lot of melodrama, and a whole lot of pathos, far too much for a movie, but not enough to make a compelling story. As a result, most of the side characters felt half finished.

On the whole it felt like I was watching a rather drawn out series of cut scenes form a video game rather than a movie.

It's not a bad movie, but it's just not for me.

Well I wasn't entirely what to expect as many of these films that insert live action to cartoon films often don't have the same feeling as the originals. Now in this case it neither succeeds, but more especially does not fail. It is a way to wind away the hours and a good deal has been done with a film that does not have the backing of a major film seen generally in the West. I did like the way some of the characters build and their interactions. Also for those not expecting it, namely my Son, it is subtitled and like many films of this genre over-dubbing English would simply not have worked. If you are prepared to read the subtitles, see the characters, and listen to the tone of the voice it helps establish the emotion at the time. At the end of the day, I enjoyed it, my Son ended up enjoying it; it is not a US Blockbuster type film and it is not one of those cheesy US made for television films. It is from my youth one of those better than the rest B Movies with credible actors, some good special effects and a plot that generally builds.

I absolutely loved this film! It reminded me of Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and especially Space Above: and Beyond, but at the same time had it's own unique Japanese style. I really enjoyed the character development and the sense of honour and tragic heroism. Thoroughly enjoyed the special effects in the battle scenes, which didn't leave the viewer totally dazzled and bewildered. Must admit I was crying like a baby by the end. Wonderful!
