Space Hulk Vengeance is a real time game based on the infamous Board game
Space hulk vengeance of the Blood Angels is a warhammer 40K game made by the joint efforts of the not yet evil Electronic Arts and Games Workshop. this game is also a direct sequel to Spacehulk on MS DOS and Amiga (it makes me feel old knowing what an Amiga is). While the first game focused on the Deathwing Chapter, Vengeance focuses on the Blood angel chapter.
it contains it's own campaign mode, along with 20 "Famous missions" which are recreations of famous battles (challenge missions), a few of the original spacehulk DOS missions, and even the first seven Space hulk board game scenarios, All contained (quite to my amazement) on one disk. The game also has a VERY competent A.I, Squad mates react to and carry out orders to the letter (and on there own, with little to no assistance.) while defending themselves, while the enemy actively hunts both the player and your squad (most of the time accomplishing that goal), taking the fastest routes to get close to you or a squadmate, and you will often find your squad mobbed and surrounded by many enemies.
-the game does suffer slightly degraded graphics, being a 3DO port.
-the standard loading time can be up to 30 seconds (if waiting is not you thing)
-there are training missions, but they don't really explain things, they just give you time to figure things out.
+The game takes no shame in letting you know the game difficulty is not for the faint of heart (prepare to die many, MANY times).
+Fully integrated in-game voice over, squad mates actively give real-time, fully voiced, feed back based on there situation (rare in games those days).
+enemies and allies are intelligent, allies follow orders and defend themselves without assistance (they still die occasionally, this is a hard game), while enemies take alternate routes and flank your position, attacking from the sides or behind, even going as far as to avoid corridors that your squad mates are watching.
all in all, this is a great game and it's a refreshing take on a traditionally turn-based game.
buy it if you can find it.
Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels is a brilliant strategy based FPS of old school PSX (there is a 3DO edition as well) set in the distant future.
The "Blood Angels" is a religious-political order(Try to think of them as future day Crusader/Templars) that has conquered space and established itself as the most efficient means of warfare. Even though some of the Crusader (They all happen to have Judeo-Christian names, such as Ezechiel, Jacob, etc.) are blessed with the gift of psychic powers -used to detect the presence of psychic activity- they all carry a wide arrange of weapons, including: Guns, Rifles, Flame-throwers, Grenade-throwers, Energy Swords, Chain-saws and Drills.
The game takes place inside a derelict spacecraft, taken over by a horde of super intelligent, albeit primitive, alien beings. Although not crafted in the art of technology, these creatures are efficient hunters, equipped with a powerful set of arms, legs and claws, capable of tearing apart a Blood Angel's armor like butter. Some of these aliens can develop psychic activity, slowly mutating until they develop a human-like physical appearance.
The missions are not your conventional FPS'. The first three or so missions you are nothing but a low Blood Angel who receives and most carry one orders, (The game environment usually includes more than one player, some of the missions can include more than 20 Blood Angels, with up to 10 Blood Angels at once on the screen!) but as you progress through the spaceship, you need to give the orders and carry on the mission with the less casualties possible. Some missions will be straight and easy, such as picking up a battery cell, closing doors, or defending entry ways while the rest of the Brothers carry on the mission. Other times, though, you will be forced to sacrifice a few of the Brothers in order to carry on the mission.
But there is more!!! Not only do you get the Space craft missions, but a wide set of training missions as well, some of them more difficult than the actual game itself!!
It is too bad this game is no longer available, (But it is even more bad that I traded my copy for a lame game called Tomb Raider 3!) if you enjoy strategy and FPS games, you should get your hands on this rarity as SOON as you see one, you won't be disappointed.
