It was to my complete surprise that not only was I instantly taken by the music and the lead singer’s voice, but also the band’s similarity to my favorite band of all time; IRON MAIDEN. I listened to every song on the album and it instantly went into heavy rotation in my car’s CD player. Unfortunately, we went with another band’s song for the movie, but EDGUY had a new fan.
Discovering that EDGUY had many other albums, I began working my way backwards in time buying HELLFIRE CLUB then MANDRAKE and so forth. I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard of this band before, as I’ve been a fan of power metal since I was young. EDGUY instantly rocketed (pun intended) to one of my favorite bands and I hungrily awaited the release of their next album (Discovering Tobias Sammet’s side project AVANTASIA in the meantime).
TINNITUS SANCTUS came and it was clear to me that EDGUY was only improving with each album. AGE OF THE JOKER though a bit of a dip for me, was still one of the better albums of the year it was released and still contained quite memorable songs.
I waited with eager anticipation when I heard news that a new album was in the works and April 2014 could not come fast enough (GAME OF THRONES and a new EDGUY album!).Read more ›
Obviously it's not quite up there with Mandrake, which is my personal favorite of their's.
Space Police is overall a good listen, and I am happy with the direction the band is going if they can continue writing these types of songs. The music is awesome, although now Edguy is more a hair metal band with Power metal influences instead of the other way around. My only complaints are the rock me amadaus cover, while not terrible, I found it unnecessary, and the vocal arrangements we're a little off at times, and the lyrics a little too cheesy. But musically, this is one of their better albums. I like it.
First of all I’d like to take a moment to ponder upon the phenomenon that is Edguy. Active now for 22 years, without a single change in the lineup for the last 16 years, and still going strong and steady as ever. This alone shows a significant quality and character that calls for respect, not many metal-bands can equal this.
As to the album, I don’t really like to rank the different albums from a band up against each other, so I’ll just settle at saying that this is an extremely strong Edguy-album! Here is bucketfuls of power and speed, powerful riffs, a lot of double bass drums, loads of the familiar humor that we have grown to expect from this band (say what you want about it, I love it) and as usual a beautiful ballad.
In my opinion the whole band plays very well throughout the album. Through it all the vocal of Mr. Tobias Sammet conveys, be it rough, prosperous or sensual – he delivers the good stuff!
There is no soft opening here; we’re thrown right into the rumble from first note, which sets the mood for the rest of the album.
As I hear the title track (or the first of them), Space Police, I’m caught by the wonderful analogies that Tobi manage to adduce. It is yet another kick from Edguy to every critic, ungrateful fan or other people who for some reason think they have a right to intervene where they actually don't. At one hand it’s kind of sad that someone always have to complain whenever a band comes out with a new album, yet at the other hand I’m grateful that they do – as it has contributed with inspiration to so many great songs.
Defenders of the Crown is catchy, well played, heavy and fast.Read more ›
"Space Police" the song is an excellent choice for a title track (well ... half of the title track, as "Defenders of the Crown" is another track, but I digress) as it is a bold identifying statement of who Edguy is, a defiant jab at their critics, and a just plain catchy and musically outstanding song in its own right.Read more ›

Edguy always rocks on at least one track which makes the album a buy. But the % of rock per album is not always the same. However, Edguy rock is worth 4X anybody else's rock. Read morePublished 23 months ago by hongdo
