Dian Curtis Regan is the author of many books for young readers, ranging from picture books to YA novels. Popular titles include Princess Nevermore, Monster of the Month Club (series), Ghost Twins (series), Rocky Cave Kids, and the award-winning Space Boy trilogy.

She is a recent recipient of the Golden Quill Award from the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. She is also a former "Member of the Year" of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), has been inducted into the Oklahoma Professional Writers' Hall of Fame, and has received a "Distinguished Medal of Service in Children's Literature" from the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers. Also, a library in South America has been named after her.

Dian received a Crystal Kite Award from SCBWI for her picture book, Space Boy and the Space Pirate. The book was also a finalist for the Colorado Book Award, and was featured at the National Book Festival in Washington D.C. Space Boy and the Snow Monster was a finalist for the Colorado Authors' League Award.

Dian graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and taught school in Denver. She has lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Venezuela, and Kansas. Presently, she lives in her home state of Colorado.

A beautifully illustrated snowy space adventure

My son and I have read this book together a couple of dozen times over the past two years as he grew from 3-5 years old. The characters, story, and comic book/graphic novel style have kept us engaged every time. We've read hundreds of different picture books together and this book is close to the top of the list.

Niko takes his copilot Radar (a toy robot) and his faithful dog Tag, to inspect their spaceship which is buried in snow. While they try to dig it out, they notice a Snow Monster and also realize that Radar is missing. Has the snow monster captured him? They get the ship loose and pursue the monster, but it is hard to find Radar in all the snow and ice. (As readers we can see his feet sticking out of a snow drift with a thought bubble, "This is SO NOT the Planet Ice adventure I had in mind...")

The illustrations transition from the backyard to the surface of Planet Ice. We can see that the Snow Monster looks a lot like Niko's sister, Posh - so much so that Tag deserts Niko and lets the monster pet him. A double-page spread shows the ship taking off as the Snow Monster and a Killer Bunny Spy lob dangerous snowballs at them while fierce-looking snowmen glare at the crew. When the ship finally approaches Planet Home, we can see Niko and Tag both concentrating so hard that their tongues are sticking out the corners of their mouths. And as the story ends, we can see the crew inside the warm house while Posh, the bunny, and the snowman are outside the window stockpiling more snowballs. Could our heroes still be in danger?

This is a perfect story for children who enjoy make-believe and outer space. I received a copy from the publisher for review purposes

There is nothing wrong with having a big imagination. Niko certainly has a very large imagination that he uses to pass the time on a very snowy day. Niko and his trusty companion, a dog named Radar, are on a mission to defeat a snow monster, a young girl throwing snowballs. Their adventure takes them into outer-space to planet ice.

Young readers will enjoy the colorful illustrations set up in a comic book form for easy navigation. Sentence structure is basic and easy to read for any beginner. Parents and teachers will enjoy sharing this story that can be interactive and engaging.

Space Boy and the Snow Monster, the third book in her Space Boy trilogy, takes us to Planet Ice, where her lovable characters confront a snow monster and a killer bunny. With its rollicking good humor, spine-tingling suspense, and out-of-this-world illustrations, Regan's trilogy will become one of your kids' all-time favorite books!! Best read with a steaming hot cup of cocoa!!

Another wonderfully playful and fun Space Boy book with Niko, his sister Posh (who looks an awful lot like the Snow Monster) and Niko’s fearless robot friend, Radar, as they explore Planet Ice. Robert Neubecker’s bold and colorful drawings perfectly compliment the story. Young readers will be chomping at the bit to read all three of the Space Boy book adventures!

If your son or daughter likes space stories and laugh-out-loud humor tucked into the text and the illustrations, this book is for you! All three books are so creative and the illustrations are the best! I love the friendship between Radar, Tag, and Niko - my sons do as well because they're always reading them.

Thanks to #kidlitexchange for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟Space Boy and The Snow Monster by Dian Reagan. Wonderfully illustrated in comic book style pages. Niko and his sidekick puppy must rescue his robot friend from the evil snowman while fighting with his nosy sister. Very imaginative. Recommended for readers 7 and up in my opinion. Younger readers may have trouble with some of the vocabulary. This is book 3 in a series and will encourage interests in series for children at an early age.
