The Spain of the Catholic Monarchs is a comprehensive history of the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the first to be published in English since that of William Prescott in 1837. It provides full coverage of political, military, economic, social, cultural and religious life in Spain during this period. The book opens with an examination of the origins and upbringing of the two rulers before moving on to look at the difficulties surrounding Isabella's accession in Castile, and the consolidation of the new regime. The origins and work of the new Spanish Inquisition are analyzed, as is the war against the Muslim kingdom of Granada. The author looks in detail at economic life, including overseas trade and maritime discovery, foreign policy, including the Italian wars, and religion in Spain, including the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, the treatment of Muslims before and after that date, and the religious and economic life of the Church, together with efforts to reform it. The chapter on culture discusses achievements in literature, art, architecture, music and drama, and assesses the influence on Spain of Humanism and the Renaissance. The book concludes with an evaluation of the achievements of the Catholic Monarchs, and their legacy to Charles V.

About the Author

John Edwards read Modern History at The Queen's College, Oxford, where he was also Laming Junior Fellow. His doctoral thesis (1976) was on Cordoba and Jerez de la Frontera in the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. He taught, as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader, in the School of History at the University of Birmingham, and is now Research Fellow in Spanish in the University of Oxford. He has published extensively on the political, economic, social and religious history of Spain in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Since my younger years, I have always been passionate about nature. As a kid, I used to spend hours and hours in my grandma's garden playing with her two dogs, Jimmy and Heart. I remember myself waiting until the end of each school year so that I can spend the entire summer living with my grandparents about 40 miles away from my home town. It's such a pleasure to remember these things…

As I grew older and started thinking more about my future, I decided not to get too much away from the things I used to love and chose a profession that would be as close to my heart as possible. At about 25 years old, I graduated as a public health and agriculture specialist at San Jose State University in California.

And Yes, I did study two specialties at the same time, and even though it was hard, looking back, I still think that it was a very good decision.

I used the knowledge from both of these fields and went through life doing what I love the most- helping people and taking care of their health, as an independent nutrition expert, and using my horticulturist knowledge to build my own dream garden where now I can spend all the fascinating summers and enjoy my free time. But don't get me wrong, the fire inside me is still there at 56…

Just recently, I found my new passion for writing and publishing – sharing my years of knowledge and experience with others. And hopefully reaching thousands, maybe even millions of people who have the desire to live healthy, happy, and wild life. And teach them how to live an active lifestyle and get all the joy and happiness you truly want.
