This was definitely not easy to put together because they don't label the pieces (but, the screws and bolts ARE the same size as pictured so you just have to place the piece on the instruction manual to see if it's the right one). It took three people (one to read instructions and get things together and two to put it together) and about three and a half hours. We had a few screws and washers left over but nothing has fallen apart yet!
You will need sand--we bought about 500 lbs of sand from Home Depot and you'll need a large funnel to get it in the base (we improvised with a sturdy piece of cardboard folded in half but it was a pain). Water is not the best option for us in Colorado as it evaporates and will freeze and possibly crack the base.
Don't fill the base with water as recommended in the instructions though. One crack, or one freeze/thaw cycle and it will drain out. I filled ours with sand which was actually very difficult because the sand that we got was a little damp and didn't pour. Because of how the post goes into the base you need something that will flow easily around the post.
They sell a gel specifically for these hoops, which will pour easily and then firm up to a gel which won't leak out. I have no idea how you'd get rid of that in the future but it would last while you had the hoop. I wish I had done that instead of spending 3 hours scooping one handful of sand at a time into the base.
You need about 250-300 pounds of weight at the bottom to keep it stable, which sounds like a lot but a bag of play sand is usually 40-50 pounds so that's 5-6 bags of sand. Many people in our neighborhood don't bother filling it up and just put the weights on top of the base, this could include bags of gravel, large rocks, etc.
It plays great, the acrylic backboard really helps with stability and bounce and playability. The height of the hoop adjusts with a spring-loaded lever that might be tricky for small kids to use. There are other hoops with better adjustment systems. But overall we're happy with the purchase.
