But Spalding went ahead and honored the Warranty and my nephew will be receiving his new ball this week. There was a slight delay in the shipping of the new ball since they were out of stock so they sent an upgraded "Indoor/Outdoor Never Flat ball." I am pleased with Spalding effort to please their customers. There are good companies out there that believe in customer service.
Spalding stands behind their product.
I think when Spalding and any other basketball manufacturer says "premium composite leather" or "PU coated leather" its purposely misleading for most not familiar with the term. Its not leather at all, its rubber, which is fine. My issue is the "composite leather" on this ball felt very much like rubber. It didn't feel anything like some of the faux leather balls out there. Add to the fact that the picture looks like a leathery type basketball, I fell for it. Many of you already knew this, but I haven't purchased a basketball ball in about 10 years. I feel like a sucker.
The best thing about this ball is the price ($20). The basketball itself is fine. The very rubberized rubbery rubber is very grippy, it came fully inflated (although I'd prefer it with a little more bounce, but you cannot tamper with the air valve for the first year or you will void the warranty), and it feels durable. That's great but I just cant get over the fact that its so cheap and rubbery.
Personally, I feel this basketball is best suited to be bought in bulk by middle schools and high schools. Not for me. I'm going to send it back and purchase a more realistic fake leather ball (like the one I've had for 10 years).
Edit: I did return this ball and bought the Spalding Tack Soft Basketball. Its about $2 cheaper and I think that's more along the lines of what I was picturing when I purchased this ball.
1) It's hardcore beyond belief. I play on a court with trees to either side and don't have to worry about anything stabbing my ball to death (it's happened before). Barring some terrible SUV run-in, it's not going to die on me any time soon.
2) The material is quite grippy. Even when it's a bit moist out I don't have to worry about being any worse of a ball handler than I normally am.
Some not so amazing things about it:
1) Unless you're a lumberjack, this thing is going to hurt your fingers. Maybe I just shoot oddly, but it seems to have a sandpaper effect at times - not a good thing if you enjoy playing for a while.
2) It sounds REALLY WEIRD. I mean, realllllly weird. It reminds me a bit of those bouncy kickballs from grade school, except on steroids. Every single person I've played with has done a double-take, so don't buy if you like playing with negative Nellies.
Overall, good ball. Don't anticipate any long-term issues.
It is a ball pretending to be a basketball.
The grip feels like it is stabbing into my fingertips.
It has the feel of just.... it just feels like a fake ball.
Don't get it. Do yourself a favor and get another ball.
I read reviews about the weird sound the ball emits when bouncing. I did not care about sounds as long as the ball bounces well.
I bought 2 balls, 1 Intermediate and 1 adult sized. Both balls have a "thud" about them when they bounce. This thud is irregular and depends upon what part of the ball hits the ground. The balls also don't bounce as well as my other non-Neverflat outdoor basketball. I went to my local store and tried out in-store another Neverflat. Same thing. Doesn't bounce as high as the other non-Neverflat balls and also has the weird thud sound. I have to put more effort into bouncing this ball.
I have returned the adult size ball and bought a Spalding Street ball for $9.99. Much cheaper and much happier. This new ball is completely forgettable as it is a regular, "normal" ball. Funny though, I did have to inflate the new ball only 5 days after owning it, which made me lament that the Neverflat technology is not ready for prime time.
