The author's personal politics leads him to be rather grudging when he speaks of atrocities committed by the Republican side, and to engage in some annoying whataboutism, immediately following up with context designed to soften the blow against the Republican reputation, or with a worse Nationalist tragedy. This gets annoying, but doesn't ultimately detract too much from an otherwise devastating and informative look at a horrible event.

Revisionist history that minimizes Republican mistakes and emphsizes the villainy of the nationalist military. Have not finished the book but regret the lack of context that explains why the Spanish on both sides resorted to conflict to resolve their differences...and it may have been the only possible option.

This book provided a very detailed description of the Civil War. It notably described the roles of the Spanish but also that of Italy and Germany. The atrocities described were shocking given that both sides were countrymen.
One criticism is that one could easily get bogged down in some of the detail.

If you're interested in understanding modern Spanish politics this is a big help with the 1920's to the end of the 30's. It can feel like a sprawling narrative with all of the different figures and groups involved, but by using bookmarks and constantly referencing who is who and doing what (which can be a little time consuming but ultimately worth it), you get into the story.
Not only does Preston bring discuss politics, but also the regional identities in Spain and how they interacted and impacted the outcome of the Spanish Civil War. This conflict is part of the power balance and shows the rise of fascism that started the second World War. I'd recommend this book to anybody who is curious about Spain's history, the roots of fascism, World War II history and world history.

It’s not a page turner. Hard to keep up
With who’s who. It’s hard to believe we were rooting for the Communists, e.g., the International Brigade.

Exactly what I wanted, clear and concise. Not very biographical, but a good history.

This work is a classic on an almost forgotten precursor to WW II. It is very well researched and touches every aspect of this tragedy that befell the Spanish people in the mid to late 1930s. With the passing of time it is now possible to put some perspective on this violent war so that possibly this type of internal conflict will not happen again. The intervention of foreign powers such as Germany, Italy, and Russia made it a grim war indeed.

An excellent book that is well written and that gives amplification to important but often overlooked facts about this horrific theatre of conflict; it is written both for the professional scholar of history and the layman. D.Sonek.

Well Worth Reading!
Reviewed in Canada on November 21, 2010Verified Purchase
Paul Preston's book (first written in 1986 and updated in 1996 and 2006) gives a very good overall picture of the Spanish Civil War. He shines a light on the various actors in this sordid episode of European history: the Spanish military, the Catholic Church, the anarchists, the socialists, the communists, the Falange, Italy, Germany, France, Britain, the USSR and, of course, Franco.
Preston details the political and diplomatic maneuvering that all of the above took part in and he lays the blame for Franco's success as much on the pretence of neutrality by the French and the British as he does on the active involvement of the Nazis and the Italian Fascists. The Spanish Civil War was a foreshadowing of the greater European war that was just around the corner; Hitler and Stalin were cynical, both motivated by realpolitik, not ideological concerns. Everyone was in Spain, but few had the interests of the Spanish at heart. If this book tells readers one thing, that would be it.

Very deep and yet one is there right on the lands - in war. Very sad story but one can learn a lot from this book - the power of the ruling class and the struggle of the workers.

One sided love in crap
Reviewed in Spain on March 4, 2016Verified Purchase
I live in andalucia and needed to try and understand the reasons for the conflict. This novel is one sided and cannot give me an even balanced perspective on what occurred. It is biased and appears to have been written by a person with his own political specs on. Waste of money'

スペイン内戦の歴史書で、まず最初に読むべき基本的良書である。
Reviewed in Japan on December 4, 2020Verified Purchase
