Historical novels are not my favorite, but this one was exceptionally interesting because the author wove a fascinating story line among the facts. The royal family in mid-1600's England needed financial solvency and protection from war, and the king sent his 23 year old son, Charles, to Spain to arrange a marriage with the 17 year old Spanish Princess. You'd think that these two royals would fall in love (they did), marry and live happily ever after, but there are so many twists and mysteries that from the time Charles and his mentor and protector, Buckingham, sneaks into Spain, the plot changes from one event to another. The author is knowledgeable about his subject and clever in his story development.

I really enjoyed this book. There was obviously considerable research taken into consideration when writing the book and the plot and writing keeps you interested. I was surprised though that the author made one pretty big mistake and that was when referring to the Infanta Maria he said that the last Habsburg Princess who went to England was Catherine of Aragon. She was not of the House of Habsburg, but the House of Trastamara. It was her sister Joanna that married the first Habsburg and therefore it was their heirs that were of the House of Habsburg.

I recommend the book for anyone interested in 17th century Western European history and diplomacy.
