We've been conditioned to think about creative genius as a dichotomy: dreamers versus doers, creativity versus discipline, the spark versus the grind.
But what if we're wrong?
What if it's the spark and the grind?
We love people whose creative genius arrives in sudden sparks of inspiration. Think of Archimedes in his bathtub or Newton under his apple tree.
But we also admire people who work incredibly hard and long for their creative breakthroughs. Think of Edison in his lab, grinding through hundreds of failed variations on the lightbulb. We remember his words in tough times: "Genius is 1 percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration."
Now Erik Wahl, a visual artist, speaker, and entrepreneur, helps us unite the yin and yang of creativity - the dynamic new ideas with the dogged effort. He shows why we won't get far if we rely on the spark without the grind or the grind without the spark. What the world really needs are the creators who can hold the two in balance.
Fortunately, it's possible to get good at both, as Wahl knows from experience. After his corporate career suddenly ended, he pursued a spark - to paint photorealistic portraits - and ground it out until he got good enough to make very good art very quickly. That's the basis of his riveting live shows, which have captivated skeptical audiences who never expected to be inspired by art - and taught them to embrace creativity in a whole new way.
This audiobook offers surprising insights and practical advice about how to fan the sparks and make the grind more productive. Wahl deftly synthesizes the wisdom of other artists, philosophers, scientists, and business visionaries throughout history, along with his own views. Here's how he sums up his approach:
The world needs people who enjoy swimming in ideas until they discover a great one. The world also needs doers who have a gift for activation, aka "getting s--- done." But the most potent individual creators in any industry or environment have learned how to be both. They've learned how to spark their grind, and they've learned how to grind their sparks. As a result they not only make things happen, they make great things.
If you want to ensure constant creativity in your life and produce your most innovative work - this is your guide.

Erik provides real-life stories about creative individuals that include their thoughts, routines, and approaches to manifesting their inner vision. He also expertly explains specific behaviors we can adopt to help us connect with our own inner vision again, fall in love with an idea, embrace a routine, and grab a hold of the unique learning opportunities that exist all around us.
The Spark and The Grind is an outstanding follow-up to Erik’s first bestseller, Unthink. Both books have inspired me in my own creative pursuits and have given me the tools to reach my goals faster. Thanks again, Erik! Please always continue to write for us!
In other words, take time to grind out your sparks! Success doesn’t come without taking risks and putting in hours of hard work. As a leader, I plan to share his thoughts with my staff and colleagues because we are a tribe of dreamers and doers~ and the world needs a little more of that!
Before reading this I was a Grinder (hard worker, get it done type person), I lacked the "spark" due to only focusing on the finish line. I had that grinder attitude towards all areas of my life.Till now.
Reading this inspired me to take risk, pause and have a whole new view point of my life. After reading this, I sat and watched my daughter in amazement. I'm so thankful for the "spark" this book has taught me how to cultivate. I know this will have an AMAZING impact on my company. However, I am tearly happy with the new creative process for another reason. I can learn to see and more understand my daughter's multi-dimensional creative world. I will be buying extra copies for friends.
Eric's book cover represents the hard work and creativity that went into the research and layout of this wonderful book. This is a great book for artists but also it will inspire anyone who wants to leave the life of merely the grind to search for their passion, their spark. It is a great guide for anyone on the journey to reinvent themselves so they love what they are doing throughout each and every day. This is a book you will read cover to cover because you don't want to miss any of the hundreds of golden nuggets written by someone who walks the walk and talks the talk. Bravo Eric!
If you're struggling to find passion or just stuck this book can help. It definitely helped put some issues I've been having into perspective and really focuses on not just flashes of creative thoughts (the spark) but also hard work and determination (the grind). It was a quick and easy read with easy take always to begin living a life of innovative work. I'm not saying it'll be easy to do, but he makes it easy to understand what you NEED to do.
Thank you for the great read Erik! Make sure to follow him on Instagram, twitter, and linked in!

This book for me has affirmed an attitude that I have been developing for about a year. A "get your head out of your dreamer arse and start doing."
I am a thinker and often miss out on things because I dont grind enough for anything to have a real benefit. In that approach though I was missing the fun of thinking, but also missing the fun of grinding.
In the pages of this book, Eric has conveyed a message which has resonated with me and allowed me to feel my own inspiration and drive.
I came across Eric via the ask gary vee show and his words got me excited about doing. Something that I tried to avoid so much because work represented a job that I detested with a passion almost as much as the love for my kids.
The Spark and the Grind has shown me something different. Its been 2 months or so since I watched the ask gary vee episode with Eric on and since then it has been the most productive and enjoyable time of my life.
Since reading the book I have made some small adjustments to enhance this and it has really been affective.
I am not saying that you have to have this book to discover these things. I am saying that reading this book for me has been akin to finally setting my ego aside and hearing what mr Miyagi was saying all the time.
Its a must read
