This is one of the questions that The Spark: The 28-Day Breakthrough Plan for Losing Weight, Getting Fit, and Transforming Your Life asks you more than once. I started reading this book a few days ago and not only do I find it incredibly inspiring but I've been a member of the writers', Chris Downie's, website sparkpeople.com for 3 years now. I've only decided to revisit the site a month ago and put it's advice into action exactly 14 days ago. With it, I've already lost 12.6 pounds and it doesn't feel like a chore. I feel like I want to make myself happy and do what I really want to do.
Unlike dieting, this book focuses on a healthy life mentally and physically. This book isn't just for those with a few (or alot) of pounds to lose. Its' true power is the encouragement and experiences of real people shared throughout. The website I mentioned earlier has been out for some time and grown into a lifestyle tool that is informative like having a social network for people trying to make serious changes or maintain what they have. There are no fad diets involved and no severe periods of fasting, crazy pills or anything else scary. Just good old fashion portion and calorie control. For me, the fitness and nutrition tracking has been neccessary for what I've done so far!
I was supposed to be reading and discussing The Help this month, but I recently began making tons of changes that drove me to this book. It really has inspired me and I felt that I was compelled to share. I hope you will look up the website and give the book a read. For you Kindle owners, it's a win-win price at $1.99.
Note - what I love about the website is that it is free ! :> (As opposed to South Beach which I quit and yelled at them for an awful site).
What I did not like about this book is that it has too many testimonals and a number of pages in glossy color which is a waste of space and paper. What diet book would include any comment from someone who did not do well on the plan?
I believe that it allows a little too many carbs, but the jury is out on that.
If you have not read other diet books, this is a good down-to-earth read and includes some motivational techniques and starting points that most other books don't do. (Start with just 10 minutes of exercise and build up. Start with simple changes in your food choices and get smarter.)
However if you have read other diet books, then you really don't need to buy this. Go to the website and join - its free. Also it does not have a lot of bothersome advertising and you can extend or limit the communities and contacts you want. Nice feature for those of us who do not like to chat.
It isn't just about losing weight. It's about being a healthy person inside and out. I was starting to become depressed before reading the book. The book helped me find what I was missing, figure out why I was depressed, and helped me find how to fix the problem. I've been fine ever since. Got the book in January when it was first released, and have been great since. I've got new goals and a plan on how to reach them for everything in my life that I was struggling with. I've even lost 12 pounds already.
You start with very small, obtainable goals to help build confidence in your ability to achieve your goals. You then build from there and work your way up to larger accomplishments.
I promise you it works! Everyone should read this book, regardless of where they are in their journey. It also helps you to help other people.
