I like Sparkfun stuff. This is a nice ESP32 development board. Its nicely documented. It works nicely with Arduino and has a few extra goodies on the board like a temperature sensor, built in button, and built in LED. I was able to get SPI to work with a MicroSD card. Plenty of program memory. for those bigger sketches. Soldering headers onto it is easy. I have multiples of these.

I don't think anybody else will buy this with all the lower cost options out there, but sparkfun is generally a good name. This particular implementation was seriously flawed with regard to the wi-fi performance. The new -WROOM models are superior in this regard, and that is why they now dominate the market. Connection to my wi-fi was hit or miss with the Thing, mostly miss unless I held it just right.
Also, programming this particular device on my mac required me to press the reset button at exactly the right time in order to program it. This may be an issue with the ftdi driver, though, or maybe just a bad cap. I have another board from a different mfr that uses the ch drivers, and I can program that one with no problem. This board got me started, and is generally a joy to program, but i have since moved on to newer models, and those models have no problem connecting to wi-fi.

Love this possibilities with this board. Code is limited still unless you are really good at dissecting the libraries to figure out how to get all of the hardware working. Give it a year and this board will be the next esp8266. Love the battery header also.

I own one - and am giving it a bad review because I also own 4 other ESP32 boards.

My Sparkfun ESP32 thing is very unreliable - it has poor/spotty Wifi issues. Random times I cannot reconnect. The other boards are all built from ESP modules, this board just uses the ESP chip and has it's own layout, antenna, etc - so I susspect the problem lies in there.

Long story short - for $7-$10 you can buy a better ESP32 board on Amazon than this one. I kind of wanted to use this because it had b battery connnector that the other modules don't - but I can't get Wifi to reliably work. I am basing this on:

1. Same code running on this vs other ESP boards.
2. Using BOTH Arduino and EspressIF IDE. ( My advise - use the Espressif!)
3. Often times when I have problems - touching or grabbing the ESP32 thing will *improve* the connection

This performs as advertised on the breadboard but one thing I noticed is the battery socket is wired backward for most 3.7v LiPo batteries. I plugged in a battery before noticing and smelled smoke. Hope I did not burn it out...my battery or my board. Why would you wire it in reverse of most LiPo batteries with JST connectors?
